The portrait below isn’t just any old vintage picture. The subject of this portrait is definitely a man, even though he lived the latter More >

hmm, I would guess the 1953 French movie “white mane” (Crin Blanc) directed by Albert Lamorisse.
With Alain Emery as the boy on the horse.

That’s my kind of boy. A little rough and playing outdoors.

This kid is quite gorgeous. His feet, the viewable part of his body from the torn clothes, his face, the stout sight, his hair, his chest. Everything of him captures me.

A disturbingly beautiful kid.

A beautiful boy, and a beautiful song.

Thanks Josh for this wonderful picture. This Lamorisse movie was unknown to me.
Throw away and avoid that pasteurized Hollywood crap. Especially the French can make wonderful movies about boyhood and growing up. Search for Louis Malle, Marcel Pagnol and others, and you’ll find the most interesting movies.

Your right Jonas, the French do make very interesting films.I do so wish I spoke French. I also wonder what this lad loohs like now.

Correction from someone who, sadly, knows. French USED to make great films.
Yves Robert, and his ‘guerre des boutons’, or ‘la gloire de mon pere’ would have him serving time now.
France is also (sorry to repeat another post from a few months ago) the country where one of the most hilarious events ever in the history of cinema censorship took place:
It was funny short film (posted here I think, or on another Josh blog), about a mother who brings her preteen son to a nudist colony.
Well, due to the theme of the film it was rather obvious that sooner or later, 13yo would have to shed his clothes, and he does in the film.
But.
France having now been profoundly poisoned by the anglo-saxon hysteria, that was of course a no-no. After all, boys must now wear burkas at all times now, in case desire is too strong.
An events then took place, and one that should go down in the history books so that when we start marrying at 12yo again in the future we will laugh cynically at this stupid neo-victorian era we all lived in:
to avoid the Damoclese sword of the law, they had the young naked boy fitted with a plastic/latex reproduction of his penis, same size, same colour and all, that was neatly fiited —on his penis…so that he would not be naked!
Absolute classic of the Absurd Era.
That’s what french films are like now.
P.s.(note another plastic one in ‘Les Diables’.)

p.s. if one wants to see more pics of him a quick search on google images for Alain Emery produces generous amounts of them.
But be afore-warned: we are also subjected to the simply devastating reality of what he later became physically.
The full tragedy of the word ‘ephemeral’ plays out like never before.

Thank you so much Ivan for the histoy and the link. What a truely beautiful boy he was. I will continue to explore more about him.

Well I searched but all roads seem to lead nowhere. So what eventually became of Alain? He is 6 years my senior and the sort of boy I would have a crush on in 1953.

here is something a bit more up-to-date of him:

So what about the two recent remakes of LGDB?
No nudity in them?
Funny you should mention that film (La Guerre Des Boutons)…
I have not seen these remakes. But looking at your link it seems to prove a couple of cynical-but-true points:
as you are aware the film’s title and reason for being is about a gang of boys that rip the buttons off their opponents pants, and end up having to fight nude.
The ‘remake’, I notice has produced no less than 4 trailers. Not one of which even remotely makes any allusion to either these ‘fights’ or their existence. This is as silly as say making a trailer about a film on naturist camps, but only the bits where they wear clothes.
I stand to be corrected but I somehow doubt the new version have the slightest ‘frontals’. That or they had to buy a lot of latex! You simply cant anymore in France where young nudity is now a crime.
Finally, and this says more than anything: since in France (and many western countries) one can no longer make films where kids are in their natural state, even babies, and any normally intelligent person knowing that the same societies have a very sharp and noticeable desire for exactly this, I notice they choose to take a perfectly old-fashioned and almost untouchably cult story in order to be able to make ANYTHING with nudity, with the fantastic excuse that it is the ‘original’ and cannot of course change the original idea. And twice you say they re-made this rather silly story!

Just to back up comments on the french’s (and other’s) desperate need for anything relating to child nudity, a simple fact: a few years ago, all TV viewing records were shattered. Not for a world cup final, not for a presidencial election, not for 9/11. It was for a documentary called ‘naturist children’. An impossible 11 million viewers watched 90mins of naked children on TF1 channel, on a …monday night at 11pm!!!!
Meanwhile they scream on rooftops for the restoration of the guillotine for anyone who might have such pictures.

Every bit of that (and your above post) is very well said. And, make no mistake about it, that is the same attitude in America. You can thank American fundamentalists for the prevailing attitudes/responses and spreading them throughout the western world.

“to avoid the Damoclese sword of the law, they had the young naked boy fitted with a plastic/latex reproduction of his penis, same size, same colour and all, that was neatly fiited —on his penis…so that he would not be naked”
And all that handling of his genitals to size and fit the prosthesis was better than simply using his original equipment, crazy.

“And all that handling of his genitals to size and fit the prosthesis was better than simply using his original equipment, crazy.”
I could only guess how many would have loved being the “trainer” to handle and fit that prosthesis back then (or now). :-) And we wonder how & why news of such (similar) makes the headlines and stays there for so long?

Thanks for the update. The downward curve of his lips are so different from his younger photos.
I see that Barnes and Noble has the dvd. I wonder if it has been edited due to current legal concerns.

Wow. Same face, built and age as the guy I took for a photo session on a beach with a white horse and a loin cloth.
Striking.

Talking about censorship reminds me of the film Cockles and Muscles. Because Edouard Collin was only 17 at the time, he had to wear a latex dildo for the masturbating shower scene.

As with this boy, we all had our chance at the fleeting beauty and pure joy of youth, yes? Even more lamentable was the loss of innocence, What a life that was back then.
Perhaps this little rider has his clear-eyed gaze off in the distance because he’s beginning to see something coming into focus that makes him want to pull the reigns and turn back for awhile…

I am really drawn to Alain’s beautiful young face as I was close to his generation and 1953 was a time of innocence and curiosity for me. I was attracted to boys his age who were 6 years older than me as I was 8 y/o at the time. I have many fond memories of the early 1950′s. If I had seen this movie back then it would have been an instant favorite. His face somehow carries the zeitgueist of that time and so struck a cord with me.

Oh wow! Awesome! I remember seeing this cool movie at school ages ago and I’d forgotten what it was called, and so I’d come to think that I’d never see it again. This is the first time it’s come back to me – and it was a beautiful story of a young boy’s perseverance in winning the submission and affection of the horse. The scene of him being dragged by the horse to it’s final submission is on youtube here:

Thanks for the link. In 1953 I was 8 years old and I would have certainly enjoyed that film. I already knew that I really was attracted to guys back then and had several strong crushes without being sexually aware. I was drawn to attractive faces with beautiful smiles. As I look back, I had incredible taste in beautiful boys and guys. I really should have been a photographer. Much envy to Penboy X in this regard.

did u know that this movie is one of the 1st and rare movies i’ve seen when i was a child and about the same age of him, when we had no tv set at home…?
it remembers me memorable times of primary school.
“Memorable times in primary school.”
In 1953 I lived in the Swedish settlement of Turlock, California. Lots of very white-blonde swedish boys in my school. I was only 8 y/o but I remember several crushes and was admired as well as I was frequently kissed. Yeah, Alain takes me back to that time.

This picture is special, the light, the shadows, the sky and in the middle the beautiful boy, proud on a horse. Timeless. A photographic masterpiece, or a lucky shot.

Allow me to rearrange your words.
“Timeless. A photographic masterpiece, or lucky shot.” To this “A timeless, photographic masterpiece, or lucky shot.” Either way you are so right.

The boy singing is German singer and ex Velvet Underground member Nico’s eight year old son Ari Boulogne, whose father is the French actor Alain Delon. If you listen carefully, you can hear Nico prompting Ari his lines.
This is from Nico’s Desertshore album, which has a movie still on the cover showing Ari and Nico in a scene from a rare art film called La Cicatrice Interieure, directed by her then boyfriend Philippe Garrel. In the movie still, it is Nico on the horse, being led by her “petit chevalier” Ari.
Yes, I confess to having harbored a Nico obsession for many years.
