Transgender Sterilization Finally Dying
There is no good reason why our passports & IDs should hold any information about our genitals. Gender is a fluid concept and for many it doesn’t have anything to do with having a penis or a vagina, not to mention the fact that some people have both or neither. Alas we live in a world where only two genders are recognised and bureaucracy insists on aligning your gender to your genitals.
This may work for some people but it obviously is problematic for others. In many European countries and U.S. states transgender people, for example, have to undergo sterilization surgery if they want to legally change their gender. Forcing someone to undergo surgery, which always comes with risks, just because they want their ID to reflects their actual gender is just barbaric.
Transgender Rights Protest in Sweden [Photo by murmeldjur / changement]
Sweden was trying to end this practise, that doesn’t really go well with their reputation of being the paragon for gender equality & queer rights, for some time now. But while the oppositional parties (Left, Green & Social Democrats) and the major ruling parties (Moderates, Liberals & Centre Party) agreed on ending transgender sterilization, a very small, hardly relevant party (being at only 3% in the polls) of the ruling coalition, was holding back the indented change.
Luckily, after a nation-wide outcry over their position the leaders of said party, the Christian Democrats, came to their senses. Last week they published a statement in Sweden’s biggest newspaper saying:
We believe that even if there is an argument against allowing people who undergo gender reassignment surgery to become parents in their original sex, these reasons are not enough to justify the continued demand for sterilization. Therefore it is our view that the demand for sterilization on change of sex should be dropped.
Many transsexuals face hatred and fear which goes against the principle that all people are of equal value – the guiding principle for our traditional Christian beliefs, and therefore for the Christian Democrats.

I’d go with: don’t push labels on individuals :P
If they’re cute, they’re cute.

That’s the lesson I was hoping Trap Thursdays would teach. If you can’t tell the difference, why should you care?

Because humans are like that.

Where ever you go christians are so obsessed with sex. I was not aware of the sterilization requirement. How barbaric and just plain cruel to physically destroy ones sexual desire. Yes the person in the upper left is very cute.

First I think there should be some clarity on sterilization. My understanding of the requirements (at least for various US states, which does not mean the US as a whole as it is a republic) is that to have gender reassigned you must undergo sex reassignment surgery which causes sterilization. This is separate from say different states forcing individuals of different classes or lower intelligence in getting sterilized, sometimes against their will. Also, in the comments of the Mother Jones article one person mentions that it was easier to have a federal agency (the Social Security Administration, which issues the Grail of identification in the US the SS card) recognize their gender change compared to other agencies.
Next, there isn’t a discussion of biological sex here in the article, which is what ID is actually going off of. I agree, ID should not include it since people have a hard time distinguishing between sex and gender. This thought process has led to inter-sexed individuals being assigned a sex at birth that they may not agree with gender-wise as they grow older as well as the very serious problems highlighted in the post.
When a bouncer at the bar or an officer who stops me for a speeding violation checks my ID, they’re never going to verify my genitals do in fact match up with what is listed. Also I’m fairly certain that I’ve never had my chromosomes checked just to verify. They’re looking mostly at the photograph, date of birth, height, and eye & hair color.
The thing about ID is that it’s listing biological sex (which might actually be helpful to first responders in an emergency or a medical examiner) and not gender. I firmly believe gender is a social construct; a means of distinguishing how one is different or similar from others. Is identification too closely associated with identity (as a social construct) that we imagine it contains no biological indicators? And what biological indicators should it include or not include? My ID lists my hair as brown but I was born blonde. When puberty started my hair started to shift from a dirty blonde to the shade of brown it is now.
Should we drop the sex listing on ID’s? Is sex listing useful on birth certificates for things like cultural geography? How can we create better awareness of sex vs. gender? Should ID’s allow for listing both sex and gender with gender being able to be changed without difficulty? Should ID’s list only gender instead? By changing the law in Sweden does it not ignore that maybe we’re picking the wrong information to used as identification?

It seems to me that this article is, in the very least, blowing things out of proportion.
Given that it only makes sense to change the gender on your ID if your actually changing your gender and all current forms of SRS do render the individual receiving the surgery sterile, what’s all the fuss about?
If we could actually change someone’s body to be a fully functioning member of the opposite sex, I’d get it…. but if you’re having them chopped off anyway, what’s the big deal?

Sex is different than gender. ID’s list biological sex which people confuse for meaning gender which causes discrimination for people who do not identify with the gender that typically goes along with their assigned sex. The fact is no bouncer or bank teller is going to check your junk to make sure you are in fact the sex your ID says you are, but if you appear to not conform to the norms of that gender you might run into trouble.

Trouble that isn’t easily resolved if both parties are decent about it?
That depends. Essentially ID is built around bureaucracy and the cult of the gatekeeper. How many characteristics must the person before you conform to to allow entrance? The bouncer says the age is okay. The bank teller says the name and signature are okay. The bureaucrat at some government agency however has to dot the I’s and cross T’s. That’s why the article mentions the insane Canadian law about boarding planes. Also, sometimes one party isn’t decent about it. You’ve never ran across a person who is opposed to homosexuality much less transgenderism?
This is why the change in Sweden is important and has been highlighted. If you’ve been living your life as a women but are biologically male do you really want to bring that up with a complete stranger at the Department of Motor Vehicles during your lunch break?

Let’s not be naive about IDs. If you’re going to list identifying information about somebody to make their ID untransferable then sex is a good place to start because it prevents, ooh, about 50% of the population from passing themselves off as you. If you’ve ever played Guess Who you know what a valuable question ‘Are you male/female’ is.
Given the tiny, tiny percentage of cases where sex is not immediately obvious it makes perfect sense to keep it as an identifying feature.

you know it sucks..me being trans myself (ftm) i cant be a real man cuz i have to take female hormones…or else i get cancer, i have a condition in my ovaries and uterus…but i dont give a fuck. i rather die happy. i dont want to keep taking these damn pills. but they are forcing me to. which should be illigal! it has been turning my figures more female, when they were boyish to begin with, im stuck in my own body, i also choose to not have bottom surgery, and people bitch about it saying im not a real man if i dont have a penis. screw you.

Danni, to provide a little medical perspective here, I would definitely seek the assistance and opinion of somebody who specializes in gender dysphoria. I don’t get a clear sense of your situation and it would be folly to provide advice in a forum such as this. It is clear that you are unhappy with your situation and it sounds like you need a second opinion. Life is too short to be unhappy; if you don’t like the story you’re getting from your current physician, you deserve to find a doctor who will listen to your needs and provide a better treatment plan.

You know, there’s actually a lot of guys, both gay and straight, that love guys with female parts between their legs… whether they’re FTM transexuals or males that have only had SRS only on their lower half (they’re RARE, but do exist).
As for the hormones, no one can force you to take them if you truly do not want to…. but you have to be willing to live with the medical consequences of not taking them if you choose not to.

Let me see… We have those who were born with male/female genitalia and have the wrong sex assigned without asking the patient how they feel about it. Then we have those who are born into the wrong physical gender but psychologically & emotionally feel they are the opposite gender. And then there are those who are just impersonators for entertainment. Do I have this correct? Forgive my ignorance on the subject.
