The history of the boy scouts is interesting, rocky and inconsistent -- and this adds yet another quirk to the history.

However, in response to the person who asked what parent would want their son to join an organization that discriminates, I would say that they missed the point.

Lots of parents send their sons to the boy scouts, and lots of boys enjoy the activities of the organization. What happens when that son starts figuring out his sexuality some years into his involvement with the scouts? What if his parents don't know anything about his feelings?

At this point being in an organization that will kick you out if you mention you might be gay puts that kids in a terrible situation.

This recent change in policy is not perfect. The kid is still in an organization that is giving out a highly mixed message. But, at least the topic is now openly on the table. And, that kid can stay in the scouts and the possibility is there for him to start to carve out a space and some possible future changes in policy.

I also think it is much better for the topic of tolerance to be openly on the table for discussion; it is much better than the long history of the boy scouts in covering up sexual abuse.

@keiran: Finally someone who speaks like they have common sense. Keiran is right when he said that even a small step in the right direction is a positive step. [I add a little there]. I also liked Asiffeta comment. As for Wordworth and his anti-Religious pals it is a big move forward if the three largest contributors are Religious groups. I don't see any Atheist groups up there. Keiran is right, over with the self-righteousness bullshit and on with progress. Half full glass is better then half empty glass.

Well, the discrimination is technically against MSM (Men who have Sex with Men), a group that is not necessarily coterminous with 'gay men'. The reason of course is the high prevalence of HIV infection among MSM in Western countries, like Canada. Usually prostitutes are also barred, as well as intravenous drug users and people who have spent time in countries where HIV is prevalent. Surely, you would agree that if one patient in a million gets HIV from a blood transfusion, that is one too many.

I disagree, since there are a significant number of heterosexual people contracting AIDS the last several years, and they don't ban them from donating if they've had sex in the past five years. This is discrimination, plain and simple, against all monogamous gay couples. Also, how the BSA makes their decisions is immaterial to me; it still involves discrimination against gay men.
