This made me cry, because it reminded me of my days when i was 2-6 yrs old. i was in ballet…and i was called in for one of the biggest people that are in New York for a ballet school…i was suppose to be famous, i was THAT good of a dancer…but then i was diagnosed with scoliosis…and i had to have surgery or else i would die in 2-3 years…i had the surgery, and i became paralyzed for a year. i finally learned how to walk but i could never dance again…my dreams were crushed. these people are lucky.

Your story is more than sad Danni. Some of us just know we were born to perform a certain activity better than most but we do it for the love of the activity itself.

Being a male dancer I love seeing young men who enjoy the art as much as I did. Us male dancers need to be featured more!!!

I realize it’s a near impossibility that you are unaware of these videos, but just in case . . . Unless you’re one of those balletomanes who despises all other forms of dance, be sure to check out the plethora of material on Billy Elliot the Musical: Finding Billy Elliot (Parts 1 thru 8); The Real Billy Elliot Diaries; Billy Dance Tribute; Kiril Kulish Being Amazing; 15 Billy Elliots; Electricity the Mélange; etc., etc.
And it ain’t ballet, but if you want to see three young performers “working it” watch the very end of Part 8 of Finding Billy Elliot where the three kids who play Billy do the little tap number as an encore.
Unlike you, I had virtually no natural physical talent for dance (other than rhythm) and, unlike Billy Elliot, both my parents wanted me to be a dancer (my father had given up a career as part of a tap act in Vaudeville and he never got over it). Despite not being a “natural,” by the time I realized it was more their dream than mine, I had become a proficient enough dancer to go on and earn my living at it for 25 years in New York (not on Broadway), Paris and Rome.
I can’t imagine anyone who has ever been in love with the theater and/or dance not being overwhelmed by the journey these kids who played Billy Elliot in the West End and on Broadway got to go through and the talent they were all lucky enough to be born with. The fact they experience their incredible luck at the age when they are still able to express their joy without embarrassment makes it especially moving for those of us who are particularly sensitive to that age group.
Sorry this became such a long ramble.

I watched those US kids perform and then I watched the English kids perform. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything more incredible. The very core of the movie plot; a boy’s passion to dance above all else was embodied in every step, turn and leap that they took.

It was a good ramble.
I was a very good mid-distance runner but in the back of my mind I was always into dance, any kind of dance. During grade school we would have dance lessons as part of our physical education where I recieved much praise from my instructors but during the 1960′s there was no outlet in a rural, country town for a boy who wanted to dance.
Due to my dyslexia I was terrible at ball sports. Although I had good rhythm, body control and coordination, I couldn’t respond to a ball thrown at me. But in dance I found an athletic outlet.
During my 40′s I became seriously involved in ballroom dancing and on a dare I took ballet lessons. I was in exellent shape from years of speed and interval running and I really enjoyed the ballet training. I then realized I had missed my true calling.
It is sad to see young boys with serious talent and interest in dance to becomes discouraged during their middle school experiences.
