I fear irony is lost on those who will never understand equality. The advert is too clever by half. The people who fail to understand it will take t as the verbatim truth.
maybe – but it’s still hilarious
I found this advert a bit disturbing. While I knew it wasn’t a true anti-gay marriage ad, it was very creepy. But it got me to stop and think about the topic, which wasn’t gay marriage, but people’s attitudes. And so I guess the ad was a successful then. I just want the same rights that everyone else has. We don’t want anything special. Do we really?
Unless you’d call being treated equally “special”, no, we don’t.
I’m unsure about this. I know it’s trying to send a message, but to me, it’s very ‘anti-gay’, and lingering on the brink of saying that gay people could destroy the ‘normal’ relationships around the world.
Unless I’m missing something.

“Unless I’m missing something.”
Yes, I think so …… it’s called satire.
I thought it was immediately silly/funny with their ‘responses’ to what is ‘gay marriage’ and what it might do to “them [straights]“. But I can agree that the uninitiated just might take this at ‘face value’ and think it really is against gays and same sex marriage.
Oh, it’s satire alright. But very bad satire — poorly written, horribly acted, condescendingly directed. The message is actually supportive of gay rights but is, unfortunately, lost under the weight of the amateur theatrics.
Maybe so. But at least someone says the obvious: most opponents to gay marriage base their views on non-factual, ideological fear that their life will be destroyed by allowing gay marriage.
Opponents are fearful before being hateful, so we have to show them their fears are ridiculous, that nothing, or so little, will change for them.
Just asking for equality, or condemning hateful behaviours, is fighting against windmills, because it is only feeding their fears. Don’t forget they are scared of the supposed “gay agenda”, the would-be conspiracy to destroy their traditional values, break down their families, enslave them to an oppressive State, an anti-religious or a merchandised society (depending on their ideology).

My basic point is that the cause of gay rights is not well served by poorly thought out, badly produced media and other materials. We live in a digital world of high production values and have come to appreciate well done work by major artists. This piece is amateur drek. The other major point that you overlook, of course, is that in the US and other industrialized nations, gay rights including the right to marry is supported by a solid majority of the population. Those reich wing nuts who remain on the wrong side of history will never change their minds.

“My basic point is that the cause of gay rights is not well served by poorly thought out, badly produced media and other materials.”
I agree that it could and should have been done better/clearer. But that’s exactly why I said “immediately silly/funny.”
But, as Thomas said very well, “But at least someone says the obvious: most opponents to gay marriage base their views on non-factual, ideological fear that their life will be destroyed by allowing gay marriage.”
.
“We live in a digital world of high production values and have come to appreciate well done work by major artists.”
You’re kidding, right? RIGHT??? Or, have you not been on YouTube anytime during these last 8 years or more? “Digital world of high production values”??? These [digital, right?] video sites put out some of the worst crap imaginable (and I can imagine a lot of crap). I’m not saying that it’s not possible now, I’m just saying there’s ‘god’s 6 days’ of degrees between quality and reality on these ‘digital sites’.

I think I took it as it was meant to be taken. To me, the goofy acting style was meant to clue in the clueless that it’s satire. The best moment came at 1:00 when little Dakota’s eyes revealed the message behind the story… like she’s thinking, “Really, Daddy? You are SO full of s**t.”
Exactly.
I thought it was excellent. Sure it was satire, but it basically summed up 3/4ths or more of the arguments opposing gay marriage, showing how ridiculous, and ultimately rooted in baseless fears and assumptions they really are.
Maybe some people won’t understand that it is not meant to be taken literally. But then some people don’t understand even the most blatant sarcasm either. Or put it bluntly, some people are just stupid, the video isn’t going to change that either way. And the only people I could see taking away an anti-gay message from this are those fundamentally rooted in an anti-gay ideology to begin with.
There’s really no point in trying to convince those people anyway. Just ignore them and discredit them in front of moderates (It’s not as if that were hard, they basically do it themselves), and the we win.

I’m still trying to figure out how supposedly ‘educated’ folks rallying against same sex marriage morph into; if same sex marriage is legalized, people will marry their dogs and their horses.
Oh hell yeah, I can’t wait to marry my dog down at the courthouse. And I’m always on the hunt for that drop-dead looking horse….
Lets hope it never comes to that.
That’s the saddest part of that vid because it actually is true that parents have turned against their own kids because they came out as gay.
At first watch it is funny but then the gears start working and that’s when you realize how to the point it is.

Finally! A video that explains the horrors of Gay marriage! :)
Well if this is what you would call an educational short film on what could happen with Gay Marriage it sucks. I’am for equal rights for gay folks, but making straight people look like total a-holes is not the way to do it. There are a-holes in the straight and gay communities, so lets not forget that. This has got to be just one of those Allegorical storys like in The Old Testement. That little girl is most likely thinking that daddy and this here film is so full of s–t. Brodt call this a satire. Satire is ridicule done with humor. I fail to see the humor in making anyone look outlandishly stupid. Any straight person seing this, whether there for or against gay marriage would say, that’s the best the gay people can come up with. I don’t want the straight community looking at the gay community like they have their head up here a-s. There are many intelligent people in the gay community that could come up with something more meaningful for Gay Marriage then this B.S. That’s my thoughts on this video and I hope that the day comes when there is no need for trash like this and all Gay couples are treated with the same equal rights as straight couples.

“[I’am] for equal rights for gay folks, but making straight people look like total a-holes is not the way to do it.”
You mean, the same way that the religious far right make every gay out to be? Get fucking real.

I am FUCKEN Real Penboy. I don’t agree with the so called FAR RIGHT RELIGIOUS anymore then you do, but then you don’t agree with any religion,do you. As far as your thoughts go it’s your way or no way. ou don’t want to or seem to respect another persons religious beliefs but yet you want your beliefs to be taken as gospel. Like I have said before, if you wish to believe in no Deity, bemy guest. I well believe in my faith and respect others as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. When a religious person or group of persons start talking about how people should be eradicated because they believe there right to life is the wrong way then I say they are 110 % wrong. That is not how I believe and please stop implying that.

“… but then you don’t agree with any religion[,do you.] As far as your thoughts go it’s your way or no way.”
First, no I don’t agree with religion for one major reason — intelligence (or total lack of it for all religions). And as for “my thoughts go,” I rely on education for all my opinions — and many more intelligent people side with evidence and science — so, they’re really not my thoughts. That’s incredibly simple to understand.
.
.
“[ou] don’t want to or seem to respect another persons religious beliefs but yet you want your beliefs to be taken as gospel.”
No, I don’t respect any religious beliefs, nor do I need or have to. That’s my right — to believe in reality, not bullshit written thousands of years ago by controlling freaks and fictitious writers who couldn’t even get their own shit straight.
You religious just can’t get anything correct, even the simplest concepts: I don’t have any beliefs so they can’t be “taken as any gospel.” You people are so fucking wrapped up in that bullshit, it’s incomprehensible to you that even relatively educated people can’t and won’t have any “religious beliefs.” And that’s the way all of you try at the least to push your religious crap down our throats on a daily, fuck, even hourly basis (in the USA, at least) — you’ve become masters of indoctrination on the subliminal level.
I have every right to bash anyone’s religious beliefs and that’s what I’ve been doing on this site for years. The only way I bash anyone “personally” is to question your level of education/ intelligence for believing in any of that bullshit because there never has been or will be any factual evidence supporting any of your(s)/anyones’ religious beliefs. And anyone who even attempts to argue that deserves to be “bashed” for their lack of intelligence, no matter how you see yourself in your lifetime.

…First,no I don’t agree with religion for one major reason — intelligence [or total lack of it for all religions ]. And as for”my houghts go”, I rely on education for all of my opinions— and many more intelligent people side with evidence and science–so, they’re really not my thoughts. I well give you one very intelligent person that even you cann’t dispute. SAint Augustin, one of the most influential theologians of the Catholic Church, suggested that the Biblical text should NOT be interpreted literally if it conntradicts what we know from science and our God- given reason. Pope John Paul II wrote on the subject of Cosmology and how to interpret Genesis. Cosmogony and cosmology have always aroused great interest among peoples and religions. The Bible itself speaks to us of the origin of the universe and its make-up, not in order to provide us with a scientific treatise, but in order to state the correct relationships of man with God and with the universe. Sacrd Scripture wishes simply to declare that the world was created by God, and in order to teach this truth it expresses itself in the terms of the cosmologies, but was rather created for the service of man and the glory of God. Any other teaching about the origin and make-up of the universe is alien to the intentions of the Bible, which does not wish to teach how heaven was made but how one goes to heaven. Also in 2004 a letter was drafted and signed by thousands of Christian clergy supporting science and faith. It was called “Clergy Letter”. We the undersigned, Christian clergy from many different traditions, believe that the timeless truths of the Bible and the discoveries of modern science may coexist. We believe that the theory of evolution is a foundational scientific truth, one that has stood up to rigorous scrutiny and upon which much of human knowledge and achievement rests. To reject this truth or to treat it as ‘one theory among others’is to deliberately embrace scientific ignorance and transmit such ignorance to our children. We believe that among God’s good gifts are human minds capable of critical thought and that failure to fully employ this gift is a rejection of the will of our Creator. This Penboy is my belief, but as you said “I don’t have any beliefs”. I’am sorry that you have nothing to believe in,but have it your way.

Michael R:
Wow, you can’t even quote me properly — is copy & paste really that difficult for you?
“SAint Augustin” [if you’re going to reference someone -- Saint Augustine ‘of Hippo’ -- for an argument, it’s helpful to get their name correct, at the very least] was certainly “intelligent” in his day, but when you’re arguing religion where there is no physical, scientific and logical evidence in its history [including the present], you’re just ‘arguing’ with a circular reference that goes nowhere (except to give you an error message — just check your Excel spreadsheet).
And then you actually have the nerve to say (in the same context): “suggested that the biblical text should NOT be interpreted literally if it [conntradicts] what we know from science and our God- given reason.” I’ll leave it to your faculties to understand that bit of ‘irony’.
.
“The Bible itself speaks to us of the origin of the universe and its make-up, not in order to provide us with a scientific treatise, but in order to state the correct relationships of man with God and with the universe.”
Again, to keep referencing that ridiculous “6-day” affair from genesis, well, it shows where you seem to be stuck in the mud with regard to your “intelligence.”
And, again, re: “Clergy Letter” / “believe that the timeless truths of the Bible” — your bullshit just doesn’t stop, does it — even if it is from 2004. And I don’t know why you’re quoting that to me as I definitely agree and believe in the proven theories of evolution as a foundation of scientific truth. Which, again, you said you believe in evolution ….. so I just don’t understand how you can believe in evolution and still “believe” in that entire god/jesus/mary crap because the very simple fact is that evolution pretty much wipes out any other ‘god-related’ crap — by pure logic, at the very least. After all, if ‘god’ didn’t actually create Adam & Eve, then, really, what was the “purpose” of any of that “after-life” crap — there was no one around to receive it — right? I mean, after that “quick 6-day miracle” crap, you really think he’s going to just “sit around and wait for man to finally evolve with enough intelligence to start believing [him]”?
Really, for all you religious to believe in evolution because of evidence, and still believe in all that magic ….. and ….. “believe that among God’s good gifts are human minds capable of critical thought and that failure to fully employ this gift is a rejection of the will of our Creator.” With your belief in evolution, it’s pretty clear that he [‘this god’] didn’t really create anything, right?
And as for what I actually “believe in,” let’s keep that context with what you so fervently believe in, and that’s religion (and let’s not forget, the only religion for you is some sort of christianity, which makes you pretty much the same type of Atheist that I am with regard to the other religions of the world). Talk about contradictions and hypocrites!
Have a nice day, though. :-)

@Penboy: You are just one picky old fart, Penboy. I got this Info from The AllegoricaL INTERPRETATIONS of GENESIS. This is one of the paragraphs on page 5 of this Genesis interpretations put out by Wikipedia. I know it is Saint Augustine of Hippo, but the paragraph starts with, Saint Augustine, one of the most influential theologians of the Catholic Church, and you know the rest. As for what you ‘believe in” you said it yourself. “I don’t have any beliefs”. I don’t know how you can get around that unless you made a mistake, but not Penboy. As for the some sort of religion I believe in its called the Catholic Religion. Now anyone else believeing in another Religion is fine with me. That is their right and I fine no fault with that right. I do fine fault if they try to push their beliefs on me. I fine fault with an atheist pushing his beliefs,”As for you, your non-beliefs” on to me. As for “this God” not creating anything, maybe you would be so smart and enlighten me as who you feel did the creating. Also as far as being stuck in the mud, look up the word “ALLEGORICAL”. Maybe if you do that you well clear some of the mud from your eyes. You also have a nice day you old son of a gun. P.S I must say that these friendly little converations you have caused me to have with you has, I think , caused me to be more careful with my comments. Maybe I well be as good as you.

“As for “this God” not creating anything, maybe you would be so smart and enlighten me as who you feel did the creating.”
The short answer: I DON’T KNOW. And I’ve never said I did or tried to explain it. I let science professionals who know a hell of a lot more than me tell and show me via evidence they have and has not been disputed yet by other scientists (I DO NOT ACCEPT ANY RELIGIOUS “FACTS” WHATSOEVER BECAUSE THEY ARE LIES.)
So, WHY AM I AN ATHEIST? Incredibly simple: The TOTAL LACK OF ANY EVIDENCE FROM PAST TO PRESENT and what I can decipher so far, into the future as well. While you could more accurately call me an “Agnostic” and I could accept that, again, it falls on the total lack of any empirical evidence. And if any religious argues that just because he’s embarrassed to finally accept that fact, HE IS LYING.
You and others of your ilk seem to IGNORE the primary purpose of science: To keep asking questions and finding the correct answer even if the previous “answer” proves to be incorrect. And that’s what I accept. I read what I can and listen to what is presented via documentaries and try to make up my mind via logic and what they have to offer.
What you religious idiots accept pretty much verbatim is what that fucking total fictitious bible “tells” you — either from that sickening and extremely violent ‘old testament’ or from the nearly equally violent (and ignorant) ‘new testament.” Oh, yes, while we’re at it, throw in some fiery sermons from the really fucking stupid super-conservative/evangelical pastors because all you religious are just too damn lazy to even attempt to learn from intelligent sources and lastly, apply what little intelligence you have left in your gray matter to logically decide what could be the most probable reasons and evidence to what few questions you may have left stored away in that wrinkled matter in your head.
What’s become a real laughing matter is how all of you religious are so quick to come up with your universal LIE that people like me are “forcing our [beliefs] down your throat” in your incredibly feeble attempt to reverse that idea and your bullying of religious ideals because that is what gays and similar bullied groups are doing to you — BUT WITH REASON.
I and others like me don’t “shove anything down your throats” — I [we] ONLY PRESENT WHAT’S TRUTHFUL AND LOGICAL AND WITH EVIDENCE. But your religious stubbornness refuses to accept what’s offered in the spirit of EDUCATING YOU SHEEP. Very much like your teachers did in your schools — you don’t call your best teachers “bullies,” do you? You don’t say those teachers were “shoving that education [that you continually use in your daily life] down your throat,” do you? If you do or have done, then it’s you who is sick, not me.
.
“P.S I must say that these friendly little converations you have caused me to have with you has, I think , caused me to be more careful with my comments. Maybe I well be as good as you.”
As per my [brackets] and the replies of several others in here, I’d say you still have a long way to go. But don’t let me stop you from ‘learning.’
about 2 months ago
CORRECTION: Sorry, after rereading this after posting (and because there is no editor after posting any more), I need to amend this:
“What’s become a real laughing matter is how all of you religious are so quick to come up with your now universal LIE that people like me are “forcing our [beliefs] down your throat” in your incredibly feeble attempt to reverse that idea and truth of your bullying of religious ideals towards gays and similar bullied groups — BUT WITH REASON.”
Sorry about that. I make mistakes too. :-)
