Human Sexuality is Complicated…

It’s even more complicated, actually. He left out one big factor that a lot of people think they can rely on – DNA. People assume that your chromosomes correlate perfectly with your sex at the very least. This is untrue. There are people with fully functioning vaginas, ovaries, etc who are genetically male. There are people with fully functioning penises and testes who are genetically female. This can often be the outcome of a doctor “fixing” an intersex baby (sometimes without ever telling the parents) but not always. During the Olympics before the most recent ones, a person with female genitalia and female gender who had lived her entire life as a woman discovered that she was genetically male when her blood was tested and after she had won her event. I don’t remember if she was permitted to keep her medal or not, but remembered her as an example of the complication relying on genetics brings along. Then there are chimeras, people who have more than 1 set of DNA floating around in their body coexisting – and they are not always the same sex chromosomally speaking.

In my opinion, trying to pin down a persons sex, gender, preferences, and the like makes as much sense as trying to define people by their tastes in food. I see sexuality as a basic essential human bodily function, and compare it to eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom more than to any sort of activity which is undertaken as a ‘luxury’ or only rarely in order to make some relationships ‘stronger’.
