I’ve Only Just Begun
Finnish director Elias Koskimies sent us a music video he funded and produced with the help of 60 volunteers. It’s a statement in support of the Russian queer scene which is fighting against oppressive “anti-gay-propaganda” laws which were imposed to stifle gay groups and their activities and publications. The song will be available on Spotify and iTunes soon.

this video really gives me the feeling of a book I once read called “Dhalgren”. Its a very difficult book…really strange way of writing. the main character is bisexual….trapped in this city that is somehow both connected and disconnected from the outside world. a kind of dark confusing scifi.

The book you sounds like an interesting read. Thanks for sharing.

I see that I left out a word (suggested). Must be something related to my dyslexia which I find is getting worse with age.

Interesting. I love the voice in the music.
I’m very curious. Please, does anyone know of the year, make (brand) and model of that red car at the beginning (with the cute boy in the back seat)?
The red car was a Lada, 1505 iirc, back when Fiat stopped making the 124 in the early 70s, Lada brought the production line off Fiat, moved it to Russia, and built the iconic car we grew to hate. Plenty on youtube.
I am all for gay rights, who and how we love is nothing to do with the state as long as its consensual, and private, but I really find such outwards signs horrible. The big guy with the lipstick, yuk, If it means people like this walking round the streets like this, I am not ready for it. Sorry people.
i guess it comes down to what we are (or are not) used to seeing. There are some awful looking women in the streets with their face all but buried under makeups who look just as bad if not worse than that guy with the lipstick but they are more accepted (or perceived as less weird) simply because we are used to seeing such people since early childhood. its like when people think they look OK in the mirror but just plain weird in photos
I do find this video somewhat violent though..what’s with all that fighting and blood (and eye gouging?)

That is a cute boy in the back seat of that Russian junk car. I with there was more of him and less of the other junk. Bruce Tharp,You can’t have Dyslexia, your only in your 40′s. Why can’t you just say you left the word out. Sometimes your fingers move faster then your thoughts. It happens to the best of use, unless we have a proof reader. God,I wish I was back in my 30′s or 40′s but then we didn’t have computers then. Just chisel and stone.

I’m sure it’s all very heartfelt (and has great visuals), but it’s less than helpful to Russian queers to see all those cliché fags made celluloid flesh. These are the people from whom Russian homophobes want to save the country. Add the “blasphemy” (for which Pussy Riot just got two years prison camp) and the film could almost be black propaganda.

Agreed. While there is certainly an over-the-top fringe in the gay community, and while they are certainly willing to stand up and make noise, they perpetuate the problems with how we are perceived as well. The general public don’t get to see that the vast majority of LGBT folks aren’t all that much different from them. I’m constantly struck by the number of gay kids with very typical aspirations – to get married, have kids, a good career – all the things most straight people want. Since fear of “different” people is at the bottom of a lot of anti-gay attitudes, it’s important for them to learn how much alike we all are.

“While there is certainly an over-the-top fringe in the gay community, and while they are certainly willing to stand up and make noise, they perpetuate the problems with how we are perceived as well.”
As I read the above statement, you are insinuating that “they” are the “more flamboyant” gays (as a distinction) who “perpetuate the problems.” Sorry, but I don’t see it that way at all. Actually, it’s the narrow-minded heteros (and usually with heavy religious influence) who “perpetuate the problems.” Because they can’t see the “humor and style” as just that, they are the ones who make the problems and via influence, make some of us more “conservative” gays “cringe” with embarrassment because of how we have been “taught” by those heteros. If they could learn and accept to “shrug it off” as humorous, then there wouldn’t be much of a problem at all.
“The general public don’t get to see that the vast majority of LGBT folks aren’t all that much different from them.”
Actually, that statement couldn’t get any more wrong. That’s exactly how the general public sees the vast majority of gays — the only “difference” being they just probably aren’t aware that they are gay, trans or other. And, that is the real situation, isn’t it? So, by coming out (even if flamboyantly), they simply increase the awareness needed for most heteros to understand and accept how “normal” we actually are. Notice how most of the heterosexuals who do accept us usually just laugh off the “queen” aspect (and highlight that in Hollywood sitcoms and other comedies).

With respect, it’s the fags, queens and bull dykes – the very people who challenge gender/sexual orthodoxy by their mere existence – who put it on the line for queer equity. Without them the revolution would never have happened. “Gay” marriage and equal rights would still be an absurd notion.
All but a handful of the ‘straight acting’ queer folk were too afraid to speak up for anything.

you’re right Storm, but what was right in 1969 in Christopher Street my not be right in 2012 in St Petersburg. From my short stay there in 2008 for a (banned) LGBT film festival I got the feeling that the locals are keen for support but not necessarily the sort of support that the video offers. They are exactly the type of cliché fags that Russia’s Anita Bryants need, in order to keep convincing average Russians that homosexuality is a very big danger to families in Ladas and pretty blond boys in altarboy outfits. Maybe it is black propaganda.
It’s a long time ago, but you can read about the banned 2008 film festival at http://sewell.de/41S/banned_in_russia.html

My home town, Vancouver, just held its 34th Pride Parade. I was around for that first one, when I was 18. It was a tiny affair, just few blocks long with only a handful of participants and some horrified onlookers.
This year, instead of religious people with signs condemning us, there were religious people with signs apologizing for all the years of Christian abuse. Well over 500,000 spectators – tourists and locals – cheered from the sidelines. Members of the local pro hockey team – a bastion of homophobia – marched in support of the queer community, as did Christian groups of various denominations, Jewish groups and even Muslims. Mainstream politicians were there, as were contingents from various police and fire detachments; the trade unions were there along with various professional organisations.
There were gay teachers, gay foster parents, PFLAG, queer youth groups, queer construction workers, queer old people, queer Asians, Iranians, Indians, First Nations, queer conservatives and queer communists.
And everywhere there were drag queens and pretty boys in speedos (or less) and leather dykes. As is customary in Vancouver, this entire contingent was led by the less-than-subtle Dykes on Bikes.
The point I’m taking so long to make is that it is this diversity that makes it all work. Pride Week in Vancouver has become a cultural and economic hot spot, contributing millions to the City and to the Province. Better than that, over the years this mass declaration of queerness has encouraged a climate of tolerance – you’d be amazed at how many folk from our bible belt come to this event every year. They bring their grand parents and kids. Lots and lots of kids.
A social revolution requires the participation of all aspects of a community. Often, this only happens once things get rolling and the more ‘mainstream’ members of that community feel comfortable enough to get involved. But those first steps must often be taken by those who feel the bite of oppression most keenly.

In regards to my last comment I do realize that the situation in Vancouver three decades ago isn’t absolutely analogous to Moscow today. That said, I still believe my point holds.
