One of Yahoo’s newest employees is a 17-year-old high school student in Britain. As of Monday, he is one of its richest, too. That student, Nick D’Aloisio, a programming whiz who wasn’t even born when Yahoo was founded in 1994, sold his news-reading app, Summly, to the company on Monday for a sum estimated to More >

I pity the actor – with his looks, he probably gets only parts of nasty fellows.

LOL @ Ron,
I wouldn’t want to bum him either.

@kinkynik and Ron:
I think your comments are unhelpful. One ought not to confuse the actor with the role. And actually, his performance is scarily convincing – so big ups to him for doing a first rate job.

Josh, thank you for posting this. I doubt I’d have ever seen it otherwise. I tend to only read and rarely comment at all, but this was sufficiently unexpected to coax me out of my corner. :)
I definitely agree with @FuManchu (3) that the actor does a disturbingly good job. I’m seriously impressed, and wish that the FA had run this ad (going by the comments on the YouTube page, they apparently chickened out).
I’ve never played football, and only been to see one match live in my life, but I enjoy watching it on TV when it’s a big game or unpredictable pairing of teams, and have always felt a little unwelcome because of the pervasive homophobia — even on those occasions when there’s none of it at the place I’m watching from. I hope in some small way this ad, even just on YouTube, manages to hasten the change towards a more accepting culture in football.

Obvious to state, but I bet that his real life counterparts have this deep rooted homophobia because of some internal ‘secrets’.

This action by the FA is very commendable- for too long homophobia and racism have been prevalent in some quarters- look what happened to Justin Fashanu who happened to be both gay and black.
And Graham Le Saux was branded as gay and was subjected to endless homophobia despite being straight and married- he was considered gay merely because he was known to read books and broadsheet newspapers! Such behaviours were regarded as being very effeminate in a very macho football environment. He had to sue a national tabloid newspaper for libel.

right… I don’t follow soccer for the obvious reasons (I’m American after all)
but I know that in a lot of sports there is a certain level of homophobia and name calling and I’m… actually decently okay with it.
I know the guys who I play rugby with have my back on just about everything. They know I like dick. And yes, they do shout some pretty horrible stuff out on the field. So do I. It’s a part of the sport. You bring everything you’ve got to the field: your violence, your anger, your will to win. You hit hard, you mock your opponents, you do everything you can to win. And then, once it’s over, you leave it out on the field. Your team and the other team get together, drink heavily, and sing dirty songs together. That’s the sport, that’s the culture. And there’s a very large difference between saying homophobic things and being homophobic.

He’s probably the queer one. Looks like deep seeded self-hate to me.

That is exactly what I thought. LOL! I used to know someone a lot like that. Okay well not quite as extreme, but I swear no matter what the topic of conversation, he always managed to bring up how much he HATED those f***ing faggots just out of the blue. I’ve always been convinced he was a big closet case that thought that was the best way to avoid anyone suspecting him.

I live in a rugby town. The beauty of rugby is that everything is played out on the field- violence or bigotry in the stadia or outside is not tolerated.
I used to work in a local Chinese restaurant- on one occasion we were swarmed with visiting Irish fans who’s team had wiped the floor with our local team, who are one of the best in British rugby. There was about 66% Irish to 33% local team supporters- both sides enjoyed the game and left any animosity at the club ground- the atmoshphere in the restaurant was never likely to kick off into violence (even though the visiting Irish drank the bar dry).
That would not happen amongst football supporters here in many clubs, sadly.

The things we cannot tolerate in others are the things we cannot tolerate within ourselves. Homophobia is an expression of fear from within. The possibility of enjoyment is too disturbing to even approach so the homophobe goes in the other direction. The bully is truly a coward and hates himself for it. Its a great irony and a sad truth about personal freedom and conditioning of the psyche.

But… they don’t play football in England. They play soccer. Oh that’s right… they call it football. How cute.
