One of Yahoo’s newest employees is a 17-year-old high school student in Britain. As of Monday, he is one of its richest, too. That student, Nick D’Aloisio, a programming whiz who wasn’t even born when Yahoo was founded in 1994, sold his news-reading app, Summly, to the company on Monday for a sum estimated to More >

I think Asa is great (loved Hugo), but he is playing the lead in a film based on the work of an avowed bigot. So I won’t be spending money to see it.

He may be a bigot. But if you read the book, have you ever noticed how many times the scene takes place in a room full of nude boys?

Ender’s Game written by that homophobe fascist Orson Scott Card. Please boycott this movie. Not worth supporting this POS.

Hmmm, has no-one read Songmaster??

I read Songmaster some years ago. And….yeah….it was nearly pornographic, coming from Orson Scott Card.

How so?

Well, from what I remember, there were some passages that described the boy in question mentally grabbing thoughts that others were having of him and having a mental scene of being fondled…..and more. It’s been a few years since I’ve read the story, but there were a couple isolated scenes that were definitely homoerotic.

I read Ender’s Game in audiobook form. Asa Butterfield is exactly what my imagination constructed as the protagonist.
I will wait until I can download it or borrow the DVD from the library to actually see the movie.

I believe I brought this point up in the post on Ender’s Game, but I feel I should make it again. If we were to boycott all forms of art simply because we didn’t agree with the personal views of the artists, the world would be a much lonelier place. How are we being any more tolerant or accepting than those we purport to desire acceptance from? It’s honestly as ridiculous as censorship and as ignorant as those who would pigeonhole you for being homosexual.
I could give a damn less what Orson Scott Card personally believes. I’m sure that if I admitted to holding interests in some of the things I like, a great many people wouldn’t buy my books either. But there’s a difference I feel that should be noted, and that is that I am not an organization, nor is Orson Scott Card.
Sure, he can throw his money at whatever misguided view he happens to support. So can the rest of us, so I’m not going to sit here and damn anyone because of their views or what they support because if there wasn’t variety, contrast, or choice, the world would again be a damned lonely place.
Another thing worth noting, and perhaps which is most important: The artists themselves actually make very little on the sale of one item. It’s why piracy makes sense. Most of the money is made by the publishers and advertisers who promote the work of the artists, and let’s face it, artists are more often than not getting the low end of the stick these days.
Not like any of that matters one damn of a difference to me (except in the case of my own work of course).
Orson Scott Card’s stories are amazing and that’s really all I care about. And please…don’t resort to hypocrisy. If you’re planning on seeing the movie at all and if you’ve ever read the books, you’ve supported his vision–which is basically the same as supporting the man anyway. Stop deluding yourselves.
Of course it’s nothing to feel guilty about. We’re all human and we’re all here to learn from and understand each other. If we destroy something without understanding it–as Ender unknowingly does to the Formics–we are left with an even bigger hole in ourselves, regardless of whether we immediately realize it or not.
There are many things and people I don’t understand on this planet of ours, but I certainly don’t commit myself to their destruction, nor do I condemn them for their beliefs or for what they support. Everyone influences change. If someone’s attitudes and ideas are revolting/compelling enough, that can inspire the right people to rise up and start a revolution for what they believe in.
Ender’s Game taught me a great many positive things, as well as reminding me what I stand for.
Now if I chose to boycott Orson Scott Card…would I have learned what I have? Would I be so emotionally affected and driven in ways and directions I never thought I would go? Maybe, maybe not.
I just know it’s a damned good book and I could care less what OSC thinks. I happen to be grateful for what the work of a bigot has taught me.

Thank you so much. You saved me a great deal of time writing this out for myself. I couldn’t agree more. And while I may not care for OSC’s views on homosexuality (the rest of his politics are actually somewhat interesting) but he is a very talented author, and I intend to see this movie.
Also, Asa is adorable, it would be a complete waste not to see him in a movie.

Welllll – I didn’t object to EG when I read it several years ago, although having recently read the title Ender In Exile, I found a better example of who Andrew/Ender was as a more formed person operating in a [somewhat more] complete world which the original failed to provide.
~
That being said, I personally find it difficult to fully engage with written fiction that is the product of a non-enlightened intellect or at least one incapable of seeing past the pathetic limitations and arcane classification constructs presently in place on Earth, e.g. A.C.C., Roger Zelazny, etc.
Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield is a fairly strong young cute actor with a short filmography thus far who will quite possibly hitch his star to the Ender’s Game wagon [beware the Hobbit's curse, Asa] complete with sequels until he rapidly ages out [til: Andrew "cheats" time with relativistic travel in the series] BUT will the film live up to the expectations of purist fans?
In a word: No.
Major Motion Picture Events these days are commercial vehicles drafted by focus groups, edited by committees, marketed by shameless huxsters, and exhibited by crooks who would embarrass Nixon’s ghost – it DOES however have the potential for GREAT eye candy [stop wishing for Naked Boy Battle School Scenes, ya'll, really, stahp] with some interesting casting choices like Sir Ben K as Mazer Rackham, etc. and if this offends you then don’t watch movies: read books; I pursue both and find them each highly rewarding… sometimes as much so as reading MilkBoys, sometimes

I don’t care about Card, but the books are fantastic science fiction.
My only worry is the ages of the actors. I know it would be exceedingly difficult to find actors who even LOOK as young as the characters, but Asa is starting to look like he’s in his mid to upper teens, and Ender’s Game ends around the time Ender is only about 11 years old.
