Died way too young.

“The amazing River Phoenix”
That sums it up perfectly! And as NATX said, died way, way too young.
There were many in the media who, for some reason, would “compare” River Phoenix to James Dean. While I can understand because of the looks and “style,” there never were any comparisons between the two. River was far superior in acting abilities to James any day of the week and he more than proved it in all of his movies. I truly miss River Phoenix as an actor.

So true. River Phoenix was in a class all of his own. I still maintain his best performance was in My Own Private Idaho. He was one of a kind. RIP River. ♥

River’s character in the movie “Stand By Me” died young and tragically, and I remember drawing the comparison when I heard he had passed away. So young… I can’t believe it has been almost twenty years since then.

There was nothing amazing about River Phoenix, do any of you know how he died? A drug over dose in the gutter outside a Hollywood dance club. As a movie star, he succumbed to what many of Hollywood’s young stars do. All you have to do is look at the young guns in Hollywood today. He was a talented young man and the sad part was there was no one in his life that could of stepped in when he started to fall apart. Let’s hope the likes of Justin Bieber don’t fall in the same way as River did.

From my reading of the comments here, I don’t think anybody is suggesting that River died heroically, merely tragically.
Unfortunately, the entertainment industry is a machine, and its goals are to maximize the monetary gain from it’s resources, with little regard for how those resources get used up in the process. The problem, from my point of view, always comes down to money. These kids become the breadwinners for themselves or their family, and suddenly, nobody can stand up to them and tell them “no”. The very people who should be able to give them guidance and advice, become dependent on them for their own livelihood. Those that DO stand up and say something, find themselves “off the payroll”, to be quickly replaced by someone who is more than willing to be a “yes” man. Its a mechanism designed to chew up young lives, and it does so regularly. People like River Phoenix and Michael Jackson is perfect examples of this, one just didn’t last as long as the other.

You got that right. Nice boy, fine actor but died a druggie.

And this from a guy in Holland, the most drugged out nation on earth. ROTFLMAO

How cold you are Junior52MI. River Phoenix was very amazing to all that saw him act. Why he succumbed to the end that he did I don’t know because I did not know him up close and there for have no idea what or who would turn him on to drugs. I think that “Stand By Me” was so outstanding of a movie and if he had people that took the time to do just that”Stand By Me” this tragedy would not had happen. I hope that none of these young stars don’t burn out at a tender age.

@Junior52MI
Your comment is pure psychotic nonsense. Maybe you condemn people like Arthur Rimbaud as well? River Phoenix was a genius and he lived and died a genius. A great hero to all future generations.

Firstly, there’s nothing in Junior’s post that suggests that he condemns River Phoenix. Junior merely points out that he died a totally needless death. What is tragic is that there actually were people in his life that challenged him about his drug use – Corey Feldman was one of them – yet, typical of most junkies, River totally denied using.
Secondly, as for being a genius, he’d had a piss-poor education, I would think largely because his family were always on the move. Talented? – yeah – nobody can deny that. And his passion for ecology and the environment is to be commended, as is his commitment to providing for his family – a grossly unfair stress to be placed on any youngster. But, in spite of all that, there’s nothing genius or heroic in the way he died. It was just a tragic waste.

Rokker, genius has absolutely nothing to do with “education”. Even a cursory knowledge of great people will reveal that many had, as you say, “piss-poor” educations.
How pompous you are to make yourself out to be a judge and jury. Sheesh!

Again, like Michael R. and N.B. Mille above, you miss the point. I’m neither condemning River, nor judging him. There’s no denying that he was a damn good actor and showed every promise of becoming one of the greatest. But then so too are there hundreds of other great actors – every one of them with their fans and every one of them with at least someone who would regard them as a “genius” I guess. I’d have to agree with Dashiel’s comments above – much of River’s life circumstances were not his fault and, like Michael J, triumphed remarkably well over the crap that life threw at him. It’s just sad that he didn’t avail himself of the help offered before it was too late.

There really is something to be said in favor of a formal liberal arts education. Ideally, it would allow one to be maybe 300 years old with the wisdom and experience that could come with that. But in River’s case, the line from an old Kris Kristofferson song comes to mind “…he was searching for a hunger he couldn’t name.

The guy was a superb actor, and he was a beautiful kid who looked set to be a stunningly good-looking adult.
We all know how he died, ffs… None of us should condone such a waste of life…
But come on, guys, it happened a long damn time ago. The time for condemnation is long past.
Cut the recrimination and unpleasantness and let’s just admire what was once there.

River’s death was not his fault – read the full true story in Barry Lawrence’s book. He was a one-off, a truly inspirational person but he had his demons like the rest of us. He didn’t want, and couldn’t handle, the amount of fame and adulation he was getting. Give him a break, he was a fine actor and could have become one of the greatest, although his first love was music and he wanted to be more a musician than an actor.

That was like a punch in the gut, seeing him as i scrolled up. A shame times a thousand, sweet young man.

The comments section on a milkboys photo… all the people are whining. Bet you didn’t see that one coming! Can you people just shut the hell up with your contrived Internet drama for once?
Anyway… after seeing this photo and reading about him (a vegan, and a sexy one at that!), I’ve started watching his movies. Great actor.

@ Seth: WhAT’S YOU ALL TALKEN ABOUT. THERE WAS JUST A FEW WHINERS HERE, MOST OTHERS LOVE RIVER, JUST AS I DID. YES IT’S A SHAME THAT AT 23 HIS LIE HAD TO END, BUT FOR A SHORT TIME HE PUT SOME JOY IN OTHER PEOPLES LIVES. I HOPE HE CAME TO REALIZE THAT BEFORE THOSE DRUGS TOOK HIS LIFE.

Long live Joaquin Phoenix, who has parts of River in him and surely a quirky/wonderful actor by his right.
