Josh, I’m surprised that you would post that link to “Obama proposes Indefinite Preventive Detention without trial.” There may be something genuinely alarming about Obama’s speech or intentions, but that video or the article that accompanies it, do not qualify as news. It’s propaganda. Giving us 10 second snippets of a speech followed by an obviously biased “commentary” is about as far from objective journalism as you can get. The tone of the whole piece is cynical, mocking and childish, and does not provide any information or meaningful insight. This is nothing but Fox News style Republican anti-Obama propaganda.
I’m not an Obama fanatic. I’m not even American. But I know a piece of dishonest “journalism” when I see one.

Das ist wirklich der Hit! Problemlos werden die Seiten gelöscht… ist ja auch klar, dass sich kein Provider die Finger verbrennen will. Es ist auch klar, dass sich die Politik dazu nicht äußern wird. Ich hoffe, dass in der Zeit oder im Spiegel oder wo auch immer eine entsprechende Nachricht erscheint!

The “terrorists” were headline news around the US and all I had to do was skim the article in the New York Times to know they were a bunch of chumps who’d been set up and that the sting was a complete waste of tax payers money. The FBI does this from time to time to show that they’re busy “fighting terrorists” in your neighborhood and keeping the US safe. bleh.

Bush invaded Iraq for many reasons, most of them for personal reasons. But one fact – be it one of Bush’s reasons or not – is undeniable: This war ended a brutal regime of murder and unchained violence. A regime in which whole villages of religious minorities were erased by attacks with toxic gas. Women were taken right off the street, raped, then brutally murdered. Uday Hussein walked around in his palace wearing SS-Uniforms!
Not everything has improved, but the most important question has a positive answer. Are the Iraqi people now better of than they were in 2002? You bet!
I’m not saying I support Bush. But the article linked in the above post is one of those awful antizionist, antiamerican pieces of propaganda of which there are already enough out there.
Think of the world without a strong USA. Imagine what would happen if Saudi-Arabia and so on weren’t depend on the US anymore. They would join Iran and Syria with their idiotic Sharia states and I’m convinced: We here in the West would get nuked! Especially if you’re gay, feminist or something like that.

Let me explain a little of our rather fucked up judicial system to you.
American society decides it needs to protect itself against something. In this case, cartoons.
It lobbies its government to make the cartoons illegal. The cartoon ban law, which after being amended, discusssed, committeed, and finally pureed, is passed – only now the cartoons are illegal, but somehow a bridge in Arizona will be built in honor of a lobbyist and bicycle pumps may now be sold to lobster trap manufacturers in Maine, as part of getting the law passed.
Our trusty comic shop owner is charged with breaking the bad-cartoon law. He is arrested. He gets a lawyer and is now called a “defendant”. His lawyer is called a “defense attorney” aka “ass-clown”. The government is going to prosecute him, so a “prosecutor” is appointed to make sure the bastard pays dearly for exposing the children to the filth.
It is the prosecutors job to ensure that comic book guy is sentenced to severe and heinous punishments for his horrifically immoral act. It is the defense lawyers job to ensure that our hero gets good representation and a fair trial. Failing that, then at least a plea agreement.
The jury’s job is very simple: To determine whether or not comic-book guy broke the law. If all twelve agree that he did it, then he pays. If they don’t agree, then he goes free. That’s the jury’s job. So get your “common-law” facts right. You want to slam the US, knock yourself out, but at least be accurate about it.

White Rabbit, if I remember correctly a US jury has a little known and less used right to “vote its conscience”, i.e. disregard the law as written when determining guilt or innocence.
In reality, verdicts often depend on whether a juror “got any” the night before.

Of course, only in America can we flip flop so fast on laws (such as the marriage issue). Makes no sense for California to say, well, gay marriage is illegal, but not for those who already have it. Thus, it is illegal to do something we told you it was legal to do!!!!!

I am very happy to say that I voted for Kucinich.
From what I hear, Obama’s reasoning for not giving the “terrorists” trials is because due to their abuses, they will be found innocent and let free. But what he seems to be forgetting/avoiding is that these people are not terrorists, they are terrorist suspects. We can not continue treating everyone in the detention centers like they are terrorists even without a trial, then acting like we are a country that follows the ideals of freedom.
And on a similar note, these prisons are actually creating terrorists. As one past detainee once said (paraphrase) “If you are not a terrorist when you go in, you will probably be a terrorist going out.” That is because we arrest many people who are not terrorists (we have been known to arrest entire families, including children), torture them, their families, and/or their friends, put them in terrible living conditions, and treat them like subhumans in general. Then they meet a real terrorist, who tells them that if they join a terrorist group, they can get back at the people who have wrongfully imprisoned them When these people have no life waiting for them on the outside, the idea of joining a terrorist group starts to sound pretty good to them.
And to think, the most efficient way to get a person to talk over there was really just to give them a cookie (I’ll find the link once as I can, but opening with a cookie or a joke gets reliable info better and much faster than torture or harsh interrogation techniques)
