    1. What is wrong with all countries that have a sex offender registry? I can understand it for the hard core pedos that prey on child and commit repeated offenses. Yea, have it for them, but for something like this??? That boy is basically tagged for life and is now ruined. IE won’t be able to have a decent job, housing will be limited fro him and schools with not except him. Get real people, he didn’t try anything with this girl.

      1. This is one of the great injustices in this country, and in Britain as well. It is an immensely broad definition with which any ‘offender’ is treated the same. A kidnap/murdered will get life most likely but if circumstances allowed he would be required to register and be marked with the scarlet letter, just as this child was. It is complete lunacy. I once thought the constitution protected Americans from this sort of Draconianism, but I have since learned that our Rights are in fact Privileges that may be taken away if the government feels it is necessary for the ‘protection of the country’. The Protection Act of 2003 and the Patriot Act are perfect examples of this. The Bill of Rights is only iron clad when the government says it is. Most of the time, it is sufficient but now the hysteria over Child Protection and fear of Terrorism, particularly Home Grown Terrorists, we have lost many of what were considered immutable rights.
In order to fight child porn, which is an abuse of kids, the authorities have gone so far as to make any image of an underage person illegal if nude with an erection or in sexual activities, including mythic figures. I mean, come on! Yes, you can fight it but that is still very costly and the State knows whether or not they win, your life will be indelibly stained. Over line art… comics. The stipulation has been they must be from imagination not some reference of real individuals. Now they are trying to force the law into imagination and fantasy, knowing in part it will not stand in court with good council, but also knowing most people will avoid the fight to protect family, reputation and their estate. No matter what happens after the initial arraignment, their lives are ruined. I found out on ALCU website that they will not take on any cases of child porn which covers comics, manga and any fantasy art or fiction.

Oh and check out the AARP Bulletin at http://www.aarp.org/entertainment/books/info-08-2010/banned__.html for the list of Banned Books from the Library Association’s list of Banned Books.
        It will make you sick.

        1. Just for the record…The Chimp made it possible after 9/11 for our government to once again spy on, keep records on and detain its citizens at will. I thought we had worked through most of this since the 60’s, but 9/11 gave these demigods another chance to detain and incarcerate whomever they want.

In many ways, we are at a all time low for personal freedoms and rights.

  1. This kitty wonders why he wasn’t a girlscout if they are as awesome as this man seems to think they are.
Also, trophy taking? This seems oddly scythian.

  2. I heard from a friend that he who played the RED power ranger is in the gay porn business :P

    1. Your friend is wrong. Austin St. John is not Brock from Sean Cody. Unless you are talking about a different actor who played Red Ranger. But most of the old rumors involve Austin who was the original Red Ranger.

  3. The Israeli girl was found guilty of stealing all his bullets?
and Yes, If being nude on a bicycle or running round in tight lycra makes you feel joyous, it is gay!
Most of the other examples however make you feel sad or powerless against the level of stupidity and are thus NOT gay at all.

  4. Scotland is a bit more antiquated than England and Wales, concerning public nudity, and decriminalising Homosexuality, (England and Wales, 1967, Scotland 1981). Remember the naked rambler? He went along the highways and byways of England and Wales with the Police standing by to protect him. Once he crossed into Scotland, what with it’s different laws, the police arrested him the minute both feet entered the country. I believe he has been in jail ever since. Read it here.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/6977441/Naked-rambler-faces-life-in-prison.html

I blame Scotland’s Calvinist Church history and it’s “holy willie” attitude to life. And I consider myself a Scots patriot. FFS. The saying “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and render unto God what is God’s”, goes both ways. If the State is not to interfere in the Church, then the Church should not interfere in the State, and it’s citizens, i.e. us. That’s what you get when you have a State Church, i.e. the Church of Scotland better known as the Scots Kirk.

We need to get less uptight about attitudes, esp homosexuality, we meaning of course Joe Public.

    Whiterabbit.

    1. Your second paragraph is well written. But, unfortunately, as in England, Wales and Scotland, the USA are all the same regarding the interference of any church or religion that think they can do it and control the masses which they have been doing for centuries and continue to do so.

In his Periodical Political Post I’m surprised that Josh didn’t include the latest (as of last night and is all over the news today) U.S. Federal Court ruling that our Military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy has just been ruled unconstitutional and will now put a great deal of pressure on our Congress (Senate) to finally repeal this stupid law.

      1. It’s not in there because I think the importance of the whole issue is way overblown.

And, as you said, it’s all over the news anyway while I try to post mainly the stuff that many people won’t see in the evening news.

  5. Josh, I just noticed your link regarding the kookaburra bird song and its controversy. A bit funny, and I see both sides to it. Do you know of an AUDIO link (mp3?) for this song, so I can see if it does mimic Men At Work‘s Down Under? I love that song!

Also, this statement: “All it was at the time was a behaviour management strategy… to stop them giggling.” And towards Melbourne’s Lepage Primary (which I presume to be what we call Elementary?) pupils. That such young students are giggling at the word “gay” is in itself funny. Kind of goes to show that children “know” a lot more than we give them credit for — even if they may not understand it completely.

Also, the cartoon above is great — I love it!

    1. It sounds like the principal is just afraid of dealing with the issues that the word raises. Every kid knows the word, and this would be a perfect opportunity to deal with it positively.

The copyright issue was only over the distinctive flute riff. They are very similar, but “kookaburra sits in the old gum tree” has been such part of the Australian children’s songbook that it could easily have been subconscious. Another silly example of intellectual property law going overboard.

      1. @billy: ……. You are quite right about dealing with the “gay” issue both by a principal (or any other administrative person or teacher) and the students. While it’s “funny” (from an adult perspective as well as the giggling students), it also shows the immaturity of the adults in this situation of not explaining both definitions as well. It could be done in a very simple matter that doesn’t need to go into great detail with kids around that age.

Didn’t know that song was so commercially salable that they worry about people listening to that song on the internet. I thought it was more of a “folk-type” song passed down through generations (“free”).

  6. I have just discovered Milkboys since some weeks and it’s the best thing that happens in my life this year. But sometimes facing the reality of the world through these informations is also really depressing. I mean, it’s difficult to assume the idea to grow up in such a crazy world. Am I too naive or idealistic ? I guess I am.
OK, in another hand, Milkboys gives me some strong good reasons to go on my way.
    After all… c’est la vie.

  7. I hate where the world is going. And I don’t know how to change it. It sickens and saddens me that some of the greatest books written are being banned from schools and libraries; that more than one million visitors to the Creation Museum in Petersburg, KY give the time of day to such absolute lunacy. Or the demonization of comics, manga, fiction and art as ‘child porn’ which will be yet another form of cultural evisceration we are to face.
Or the thousands and their families whose lives have been destroyed through the amazingly wide application of Megan’s Law forcing any ‘sex’ crime be permanently registered and publicly paraded.

The idea that in the 21st century our governments have managed to successfully make sex illegal except in some instances, and replacing crimes of violence that have sex as a component, to a crime of Sex with a component of Violence.
But you can beat, torture and damage a child through religiosity and it’s called good family values.

This is a sick sick world. If I come off as disliking Humanity, I will confirm it by saying that Man has always been and will continue to be a violent, narcissistic, prejudicial, paranoid and dangerous animal. In spite of all the amazing things Man has created, it is bloodied and sullied by His despicable nature to cluster in xenophobic groups, justify His violence with mythic excuses to avoid responsibility, and betraying even those closest to Him within the group for the same lunatic ideals.
If anyone thinks a world wide society under a global structure will be a utopia, you are terribly mistaken. It will make “1984” (a banned book) look mild by comparison.

  8. Fortunately we have Zeiger working to expose those Girl Scouts as the filthy, America hating, pro Al-Qaeda, non-tithing, anti-family, anti-marriage, Margaret Sanger loving, tree hugging, holocaust believing, creationism denying, anal copulating, liberal, satanist, atheist, anarchist, EVILutionist scum bags that they are…

    …right? ¯\(°_o)/¯

    1. Who are these Girl Scouts of whom you speak? I need to go out and find a daughter so I can send her along.

Belgium church abuse detailed by Adriaenssens report

Harrowing details of some 300 cases of alleged sexual abuse by Roman Catholic clergy in Belgium have been released by a Church investigator.

Peter Adriaenssens said cases of abuse, mostly involving minors, had been found in nearly every diocese, and 13 alleged victims had committed suicide. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11260290

  10. josh,

the article about the Israeli soldier who allegedly shot a Palestinian girl – there are 3 points in it which you may not have noticed:

    1. The article is from 2005 – hardly *news*.

    2. The doctor who claimed the girl had close range bullet wounds has the same last name as her, *al-hams*. While this might simply be a case of 2 people named *Smith*, it can also raise the suspicion that he was in fact a relative with an agenda to make the Israeli Defense Forces look as bad as possible.

    3. When all is said and done, the shooter is in fact not a Jewish Israeli but a Druze, which is a strange Arab sect with roots in what is modern day Syria.

So at the end of the day it was one Arab killing another, which is something they do quite often on their own.

    1. 1. Ah, it was on reddit just two or three days ago and I didn’t check the date (just as the person who submitted it to reddit apparently), my fault.

      2. That’s a bit far-stretched, don’t you think? And even the Israeli soldiers who were there say the guy killed the girl:

“Israeli soldiers [...] submitted that their commander had knowingly shot the girl in the head at close range and then emptied his magazine of bullets into her body to “confirm the kill.”

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iman_Darweesh_Al_Hams#Israeli_documentary_and_audio_recording_of_internal_communications

      3. How does it matter if it was a Jew? He was a commander of Israeli soldiers and knowingly killed an unarmed, fleeing little girl. That’s downright murder, even in a war.

I recommend you Google child soldiers and/or Vietcong in your spare time to see some of the things seemingly innocent, harmless, unarmed children can and have done.

I doubt you have ever held a weapon as a guard and wondered which member of a civilian population on the other side of a border would turn out to be a suicide bomber. I have close friends who have.

Don’t judge us until you’ve walked around in our shoes, and if you do, be careful. some of the innocent looking ground we walk on sometimes explodes.

    1. So, you say it’s ok to murder children just because they have two hands they could use to hold a gun?

Following this logic you might aswell kill all humans.

  12. Why did you remove the quotation marks around “killed Afghan civilians for sport and collected fingers as trophies”?

      1. Normally the rule is “innocent until proven guilty”.

Now that I’ve read a bit more about the case, though, I agree with you that there’s hardly any reasonable doubt to their guilt, so I shouldn’t have paid much attention to that omission.

  13. And I noticed that there are 2 mentions of Israeli wrong-doings in this post (one of them 5 years old, as has been pointed out), yet none of the recent murder of 4 Israeli civilians by Hamas, and its subsequent celebration by thousands of Gazans.

    1. You mean the Hamas is to blame when Israel commits war crimes and whips a singer for singing in front of women while they call themselves the only true democracy in the Middle East?

      1. “Israel” didn’t whip the singer. The government had nothing to do with it. And the action was only possible because the singer is a fundie nut job himself, who agreed to it.

I’m just wondering what your selection criteria are for the news you post here. Clicking on the tag “Israel”, I count 8 PPPs featuring news items about Israel, all of which highlight wrong-doings on the part of Israelis, and none of which feature wrong-doings on the part of Palestinians.

And tags for “Iran” or “Saudi Arabia” don’t even exist.

      2. do you consider arab honor killing as political news ?

what about hand amputation according sharia law ?

        female circumcision ?

70 years old men marrying 8 year old girls ?

        no humanitarian attention here ?

        1. The difference is that they don’t *pretend* to be a free, democratic country. There’s also enough hysteria about Islam in the “news” already.

  14. Josh wrote about a day ago “It’s not in there because I think the importance of the whole issue is way overblown.

And, as you said, it’s all over the news anyway while I try to post mainly the stuff that many people won’t see in the evening news.”

Admit it Josh, you don’t post that stuff because it is not ‘hate America’ bullshit. I used to like your blog but it is so predictable: the predominate anti-Americanism is pee-thetic.

But this is your blog … so shoot away.

  15. From reading the article, doesn’t sound like he meant any harm at all. Sure it’s hard to run a class of 30 kids who would go into hysterics at the word gay… like my classes growing up. Just trying to minimise disruption, as teachers try to do every day. I’m not saying it’s right, just that it doesn’t seem there was any prejudice behind it at all.
