Spud
It’s South Africa 1990. Two major events are about to happen: The release of Nelson Mandela and, more importantly, it’s Spud Milton’s first year at an elite boys only private boarding school. John Milton is a boy from an ordinary background who wins a scholarship to a private school in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Surrounded by boys with nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud has his hands full trying to adapt to his new home.
Along the way Spud takes his first tentative steps along the path to manhood. (The path it seems could be a rather long road). Spud is an only child. He is cursed with parents from well beyond the lunatic fringe and a senile granny. His dad is a fervent anti-communist who is paranoid that the family domestic worker is running a shebeen from her room at the back of the family home. His mom is a free spirit and a teenager’s worst nightmare, whether it’s shopping for Spud’s underwear in the local supermarket…

Nothing starring John Cleese can be total crap.

That’s what I was thinking. :)

Exactly! When I saw Cleese in the film, I was sold right there and then! Seems like a decent film too :P

Some of the scenes in the trailer reminded me of Tom Brown’s Schooldays. Anyone with that cute an accent must be good though.

Yes this looks really fun and does remind one of “Tom Brown’s School Days”. And he is so cute I just have to see the film. :)

wow – it really is hard to tell from the trailer… but I like the concept, and this talk of Tom Browns’s school days is a valid point.

Exceptionally funny books! I hope the film lives up to them. I was so pleased to hear that Troye would portray Spud. The character is actually quite intellectual and deep in the book, so the potential is there that it need not be anything like other teen school movies, ala Porky’s. It should be interesting.

@Josh: “The film might be total crap, hard to tell from the trailer. We’ll see
”
Let’s hope it’s at least as interesting as this trailer — I give it an A+ for the ‘tease factor’. Some of it seems to present itself as possibly another sophomoric/”Porky’s” type of storyline [by how they treat his body/penis size and their typical attitudes towards females just to get laughs], but I hope the intelligence factor rises above that quick edited trailer. It looks like it may have an interesting story and it looks like Troye Sivan just may be a “shining apple” portraying “Spud.” His accent is adorable to listen to and I also enjoy seeing John Cleese. As you said, “We’ll see.”

In addition to his acting, Troye is a fantastic singer. Check out his YT channel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v5C3STX_M4
I’m a bit worried that this movie might be a train wreck. Any one who saw Cleese playing Q in Die Another Day knows that he isn’t always brilliant.

Ohhhh wowwwwww, that was amazing….take that Justin Bieber!
Talented young children really do make the world go ’round. Whenever I hear Michael Jackson’s “Who’s Lovin You”, my soul melts, and he was 8 when he sang it. This boy gives me the same feeling, and his voice isn’t even that powerful, just beautiful.
Now I REALLY want to see this.

Read the book and the sequel; the local library has them in teen room. Enjoyed them both; the trailer and description look like the movie is to be a pretty close adaption. I’ll definitely check it out.

the boy is handsome in his own way and certainly has some skills and, IMHO, has a beautiful singing voice. I hope he goes far….thumbs up!

I wanna read the book kinda badly! The whole thing is so different that made me completely curious at the first time.

Wow I cant believe it is Troye Sivan. His first lead role.
Well I know for sure that the book was a massive hit in ZA. Don’t have too much faith in ZA movie producers, but the overall story is excellent.
Cant believe its the same boy that use to reply my posts on YouTube about 3 years ago.
I remember him with his curly hair and doll face singing songs by Celine Dion and Josh Groban… lol
Always thought he had potential, just never expected he would play the role of Spud lol
Good Luck Troye!
