The Dirty Kids
The Rainbow Gathering is an annual festival that takes place around the Fourth of July holiday weekend in a different American national park each year. Part of the point is to celebrate inclusiveness and pray for world peace. The festival attracts hundreds of teenage runaways and travellers who are nicknamed ‘The Dirty Kids’. The 2009 Gathering was held in the Santa Fe National Forest, New Mexico.

Rainbow gatherings are more than just American. They happen all the time all over the globe. I believe there is a permenant camp somewhere in the alps right now. I had the pleasure of attending the European annual gathering (there are lots but the annual is the biggest) in Finland summer 2010 with 1000′s of people from every kind of nationality and background whilst camping beside beautiful lakes and forest. At the time local media reported a mass incursion of nudists – they were taking photos from a chopper over the lakeside sauna ;-)… sorry i didn’t tell you about that one Josh – wouldn’t have been far for you.

I highly recommend attending an annual gathering where ever you can. The basic philosophy is inspiring. It is true there are a group on neredowell’s who are called drainbows but all of human society has that. There has been a gay camp at ones I have been at though I don’t think it is necessary as the people I have interacted with have been inclusive and non judgmental. I believe 2011 in the usa will be in Washington state.

I remember all the outrage around here (I live in NM) when it was announced that the gathering was going to be held in the Santa Fe National Forest.

Was that outrage in Albuquerque? I loved it there and never thought it would be particularly square, but times change. Maybe its cause the country’s population is aging and everyone is becoming conservative?
I want to move back and live near UNM again. I miss it.
I lived on Princeton Ave. ah the memories. :)

There is an annual rainbow gathering in the Ocala National Forest in Florida (the largest national forest east of the Mississippi River) — the rainbow people always start trekking through our part of Florida each year on their way.

This is new to me. So where is the gathering for 2011? I want to be there.

Very cool…I hadn’t heard of these. I was planning on attending Burning Man last summer, but couldn’t. Rainbow Gathering sounds very laid back compared to Burning Man….but that’s a good thing.

I have friends who often attend burning man and it sounds intense, and hot in the day time. The rainbow gathering is laid back and often very cool. I have been at one in Utah at 10,000 feet and had my canteen water frozen overnight.

Burning Man IS intense. You have to buy your ticket in advance and there’s levels of pricing. You have to pack in all your food and water for the week. They sell nothing there but ice and coffee latte. There is a big book of rules you are supposed to download and read. The wind can be so bad there that you need special tent structures and tent stakes made of steel rebar that are driven deep into the ground. No place to bathe. People steal like crazy and you’re expected to ‘join’ a community of your choice and help ‘build’ it. And lastly, they say not to bring a significant other or you will be separate by the time it’s over.
Rainbow Gathering sounds more like my kind of thing….
