The Power Within
Gay comic creators Mark Brill and Charles Christensen have created a new comic called The Power Within. Published by queer comic company Northwest Press, The Power Within follows a 13-year old boy named Shannon who turns to his inner superhero to combat anti-gay bullying. Sounds a bit awkward but we’ll see, the intention sure is commendable.
And not surprisingly, the men who made this found inspiration in their personal experiences and real life news. From Christensen’s introductory letter:
Fall of 2010 was a turning point. The news reports acknowledged the role anti-gay bullying played in [Tyler and others'] deaths… Peoples’ eyes were opened to the fact that anti-gay harassment shouldn’t have to be a part of growing up any more than sexism or racism and that there were grave consequences for ignoring the problem.
Like Mark and I, [Shannon] turned to comic book heroes for his escape; he found a superhero within him to help him deal with his day-to-day challenges. If you’re struggling, be that superhero. Fight the good fight to be who you are, without apology.
The Power Within will be available at comic shops soon, but Bleeding Cool reports that Northwest will also distribute the special one-shot issue to student and school organizations for free. A preview of a few pages can be found here.

I will buy a copy of it!! Very commendable for sure!!! I just wonder how many school districts will allow this to be distributed, even though it would be for free? I see that being another way the schools can say that the students want to “push there Gay agenda” on the other students…how very sad that would be. But, on the other hand, if it gives even a few young people the courage to stand up and be proud of themselves as they are then it is worth the effort. We shall see the outcome.

It’s the sort of comic book, we can only assume, that follows a socially correct fashion, where little Shannon turn to Super-gay to ‘Ok’ his loves, but if the other is anything remotely older (and thus more able to care for his differences) he immediately turns to …the Super-Police: handcuffs, arrest, sex registrer, life in prison.

Well it remains to be seen — how far these things can be pushed — but then I would respect them more for simply creating a good story line vs. pushing issues.
I’m looking forward to finding this and checking it out.

I love that you posted this, Josh. The boys above say it all.

Would you all be as supportive of this if instead of pushing/selling a gay agenda it were pushing/selling and evangelical christian agenda?

Probably not, but is this necessarily wrong? We all have agendas, things that are important to us, ideals and issues we support. Since the the evangelical Christian “agenda” mostly paints gay folk as fallen and damnable, one might understand why we might be less than supportive of such a message.

Very well said.

I agree with you on that — to my knowledge there is nothing that qualifies as “gay agenda” that seeks to de-humanize individuals or even redefine them as criminals simply for their attraction to another individual!

I think they get enough support as it is.

Except that being an evangelical Christian is a choice. Last I heard, our sexual orientations are pretty much blue-printed at birth.
No minority group has ever gotten equal rights without a struggle. Sit back and let others do it for you if you wish, but this is a uniquely great time in history to be a part of it all.

You really make a damn good point. I always enjoy your comments but this really hits home for me. Thank you.

ofcourse I would be supportive of that… evang. chrissie agendas are enjoyable when read as pure fantasy :)

Where else other than Milkboys would I be made aware of a publication like this? This site has healed a lot of wounds for me. I hope the schools will buy it but I have my doubts, especially in america. I would like to subscribe to this publication soon as possible.

Is Charles Christensen the same person as Charlie Christensen, the author of “Arne Anka”?

I totally saw this book and talked to the creators back in March at the Emerald City Comic Con

Sounds like a ripoff of Captain Marvel to me.
