Tolerance makes Happy
A two-year-long study about queer rights in Europe was concluded by the European Union’s Commissioner for Human Rights. The study did not only analyse the different laws concerning the queer folks in all member states of the European Union but also includes surveys in which European citizens where askes about their opinions regarding queer topics. The map below, for example, show on a scale from 1 to 10 how comfortable people feel with having a gay neighbour:

The same three countries—Sweden, The Netherlands and Denmark– were also giving the highest approval rates when asked about their support for same sex marriage and adoption by same sex couples. It’s probably no coincidence that those three countries also happen to be among the world’s happiest countries (and the most democratic. And the ones with the most press freedom. And the least corruption).

Of course it’s no coincidence! With all that acceptance and toleration amongst their individuals, these have to be very happy! there’s no other explanation! Just “Let It Be”

but what strikes me is the fact that polish people are apparently more tolerant than czech people. i would have expected it to be the other way round.
and… luxemburg is on the 4th place. yay! :)

I love the Netherlands and Sweden but Denmark! :S come on they can’t be more culturally closed, just look at the immigration restrictions, and what the people think about people living there with other customs, queer-friendly, probably, but definitely racist and culturally close-minded!
First off, I applaud the Scandinavian countries, and the Netherlands, they’re beacons of tolerance for gays and should be very proud of their work on gay rights, womens rights, human rights and equality. Denmark included.
I don’t see how you can say that Denmark is racist for being culturally closed. Culture is very different to race, I actually respect Denmark’s policy on expecting new migrants to adopt Danish values, because it is those values of the enlightenment that make the Scandinavian countries free. I’m not racist nor close-minded, my grandpa was a Chinese immigrant and my aunt from that side is a Malaysian Muslim convert.
What I am, however, is a realist. I believe that Western values of secularism – separation of religion and state, democracy, LGBT rights, feminism, and individual liberties are superior and new migrants should be welcomed with open arms if they celebrate this. The problem that does exist (and this has been studied thoroughly) is that homophobia (including violence towards gays), anti-Semitism and abuse of women is a huge problem amongst certain migrant communities.
When you talk about respecting culture, what about the study by Gallup that found that 70% of Egyptians supported stoning adulterers to death? Or the fact that women cannot drive cars legally in Saudi Arabia? Or that over one hundred people have been hanged in Iran, where religion is intertwined with the government. I don’t need to respect that.
I love a diverse society, but as my grandpa did when he came from China, I believe there needs to be an emphasis on integration if we want to see a harmonious society. So that when a migrant moves from a country in which gay people are hanged or beaten up, they must accept that in Danish society gays are valued as equal. Or so that when people move from a society where the majority of little girls are put into forced marriages, they understand that in Danish society you cannot force a girl against her consent into a marriage.
That isn’t racism or being close-minded, on the contrary, it is appreciating the freedoms we have in societies like Denmark. Denmark is a rolemodel, and a place that hundreds of countries should emulate. :)
Edit: Also, just pointing out, the Netherlands has discarded multiculturalism in favour of cultural assimilation as well. Partly due to the rising cases of homophobic and anti-Semetic attacks by migrants of religiously conservative backgrounds. It is to ensure that new migrants understand that in Dutch society, equality is important and we cannot tolerate people who act intolerantly. The Dutch have followed the Danes in implementing a system that expects new migrants to understand the values held as important in a liberal Western society. :)

Ehm… sure it is not the other way around – a lack of happiness makes intolerant, while you can be perfectly content and still consider your neighbour fag an asshole? At least that’s what history so far has shown… see norway, which is rich and and happy, which does not seem to have any effect on the tolerance at all.
Also I agree with me:\ – the interpretation of tolerance is probably different everywhere, but where I come from it is not limited to tolerance towards gay people but also people of a different religion or race, which, if you look at election results for rightwinged parties is not necessarily reflected in that map.
Norway is not on the list, since it’s not a member of the EU. Its colour means it’s not part of the survey, not that it’s not tolerant.
True. But does not make a difference concerning the wrong conclusion that tolerance leads to happiness.
Not an European country, but Canada would most likely fit right in between the top ranking countries.
Except for the big cities I think you’re deluding yourself; and even there it’s hardly uniformly tolerant. And don’t forget who’s running things now … if they thought they could turn back the clock and get away with it, it’d happen in a second.
Just wait a few years – once the supreme court and other institutions have been stacked with appropriately minded types – now that Harper’s got nothing to slow him down.

I don’t care about the damn neighbors. Some of the best sex I ever had was in Portugal, Romania, Bulgaria and Czech Republic. So much for this chart. I want to know where I can find hot sex partners, not what the asshole neighbors think. And also, the hell with what the laws are. They have never had any bearing on my happiness. Fuck the state!
Finally, I am not in the least bit interested in marrying anyone nor in adopting anyone. What a bunch of creepy middle-class, and might I say STRAIGHT, values! They make me want to puke. Fuck the straight world and all of its rituals that I don’t care to emulate.

Nice rant Gary, tend to agree with it.

Tolerance towards queers is not all imo. What is important is tolerance towards other peoples’ choices in life, which includes everything from religion to spirituality to smoking pot to whom you want to fuck, to whom you want to marry et cetera. Generally the fewer laws the better, imo Sweden is not doing so well as everyone think, in case you have not noticed we have a xenophobic political party in our parliament, as the most countries in Europe do which is kind of frightening.

so? america is ruled by a xenophobic party.
sweden is not perfect but still doing better than nearly every other country in the world.

What makes me the saddest is that Hungary, which only 10 years ago used to be considered the most gay-friendly country in the former Eastern Bloc, is now one of the most homophobic ones in the EU. What’s worse is that on the happiness chart you listed, we place 103rd, with countries like Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan. It’s like I’m not living in a European country anymore. The events of Budapest Pride last weekend only seems to confirm this.

Lol and yet we see a lot of jokes about French people being gay… funny.
Really ? I didn’t know we have this reputation, lol. It’s true homosexuality is quite well accepted in France, though. Maybe because we are not a very religious country; the hostility towards homosexuals mainly comes from Catholics and Muslim culture people (who hate each other, by the way) – and those kind of people are disliked by the majority of the population. In fact, French may have considered being gay was fine just to piss off the pope and irritate their Maghreb-immigrants neighbours.
Well, I guess it’s better to be right for the wrong reasons than just being wrong, right ?
Tend to agree, the more religious (Christian/Muslim) the nation is and has been the more likely sexual preference intolerance will be seen exerted in those nations.
You’ve a point there!
It’s not like a reputation though, I may just have a bad idea; I’m talking about dumb jokes you hear at Family Guy, The Simpsons and South Park lol…
But i guess that’s much better than here in México; we would be part of the lightest blue (or almost white) in a map like the one below lol.
Ok, if you are talking about American TV, I understand better. The US and France have a long story of “mild hatred” (I can’t think of any correct word to describe it) since the end of WW2. That was even worse after the beginning of the war in Iraq, when France stood against the US in the UN and refused to participate in this foolish adventure. That was a courageous political position, so what do you do in this situation ? You call them cowards, that’s basic politics. And you know, a coward is someone with no balls, a dick sucker, well, a homosexual (in collective imagination, I mean).
Variations about “Everybody hate French” is also seemingly a common joke in the US.
Of course, French media do the same : the US pretends fighting against the “axis of evil” ? Humoristic broadcasts in France show America as the Evil Empire, exploiting the World, destroying the Earth, only interested in oil, where behind a stupid and impotent President, big companies rule the country.
Oh i see, makes sense, using mass media to make jokes of each other, i should stop trusting in what i see on TV lol.
So, we should all pack our stuff and have a mass exodus to 1 of these 3 countries…My bags are packed and passport is ready!!!…Wonder if they need a great cook somewhere?
Well, France is a perfect counter-example : with a limited freedom of speech (44th place for press freedom), flawed democracy (31st), and a low happiness level (44th), we have yet a surprisingly high tolerance with gays. (this doesn’t prevent some politicians to say homosexuality is a threat to mankind, without being banished from the government party, but when was last time MPs represented people’s opinions, anyway ?). Homosexuality is in fact the only topic where we are still progressivists.
I guess all our hate has been drained by xenophobic matters : gay bashing is no more fashionable, we have Roms and immigrants now to persecute. Just like at school : when you’re not bullied anymore, it means they’ve found another scapegoat. Geez, can’t people find acceptance in their heart for everyone ?

I agree with ZZZ and his/her fears. In my opinion the study paints only half the picture. For instance: In the Netherlands gays can be discriminated by LAW (in job acquisition for example) if it offends some religious minority. These people are okay with gays as long as they are not bothered by seeing ‘gay behavior’ (or whatever they may percieve as such). It’s almost like the ‘good’ old protestant days, You can be gay, but you can’t act like one. If you show your pride in ‘free’ Amsterdam, don’t be surprised if some religious hooligans beat you up (happens on an almost daily bases)
BTW anyone notice that the only Dutch commenter above did not address the topic at all. And yes I’m curious about removing my flag too.

The whole map is total BS!
Poland is more gay-friendly than Czechia? Spain is more gay-friendly than Italy?
What the Heck!
And then, on the Map, England and Ireland (!!!), France and Spain, Finland and Poland, Austria and Greece, so on and on are in the same category?! Do you seriously believe in this crap? Are you crazy?
The whole story is nothing but the leftist propaganda made up by EuroBureaucrats ( and their mercenary so called intellectuals) To brainwash their poor subjects that “democracy” ( that is their own “-cracy”) is sooo good, tolerant, human and just.
P.S. The poor Scandinavians are the happiest people around? Yes, I agree. The happiest animals in the world are swine. But excuse me, I prefer to live in a less “happy” but more free country ( like Ukraine or New Zealand), thank you very much!
As a European who has travelled across Europe, this map seems quite realistic to me. Of course, a single number to represent gay acceptance is necessarily biased and doesn’t reflect the complexity of each country situation. In fact, the question is a mix-up of “do you care what kind of guy is your neighbour?” and “what do you think of gay people?”
But I can’t agree with you about the countries ranking. Would you think Italy is more gay-friendly than Spain, for instance ? You must be joking !
And you sure have a special perception of freedom – but maybe free market is all there is about freedom, huh ?And Eurobureaucats = leftists ! lol
I prefer not telling you my political opinions, then, you would be scared.
I can’t say I travelled across the Europe too much, I’m just a poor Ukrainian guy living in New Zealand. But I’ve seen what I’ve seen. And I’m ready to answer your questions. I know that Poland is ruled ( to some extend of course!) by fundamentalist Catholic priests** while Czechia is relatively religiously loose country. The same about Spain and Italy. I’ve never been to Palermo but I know that Milan and Torino are much more “modern” and tolerant ( hey, I’ve seen teen boys hugging and drinking wine in a Torino pizzeria! Absolutely impossible in New-York City, hah) than Barcelona, for sure. ( actually, Northern and Southern Italy’s are two very different countries. Like American Vermont and Arkansas. Even more!)
And… about your political opinions, please, don’t be so funny! I was born in Soviet Union, my old relatives were killed and exiled, and even more, I spend my childhood years in Central Asia and I know what Muslim Fundamentalism is about, thank you! There is nothing that can surprise ( not speaking of scaring) me.
It is why I am a libertarian and anarchist. It’s why I understand ( I was forced to!) in which way our shitty world works. You poor liberals and conservatives have no idea…
** A Polish cabby told me “We lived under Reds (=commies) but now we are living under Blacks (=Catholic priests)”. Not the best alternative, what do you think?
Poland is tolerant. Maybe not as much as other countries but I like it here. You say something about priests and other stuff… you are wrong. We don’t like church gettin into politics and nowadays church is quiet.
The real problem is that whole world sees us as a second vatican where gay people are beeing killed. That is anoying -.- We in Poland don’t need to be saved. You probably want to see a beautifull parade in my capital where everybody is smiling and having fun – I don’t and you must forget about it. When some guy dances as a stripper but is dressed as a priest I get angry since it is offensive. And most of gay people in Poland don’t like such behaviour. Only few of us attend such events since we want just normal live and most of us have it.
As I said I like it here, other people don’t give a damn about my sexuality and as most of my gay friends I don’t need to have any parades in the city.

I don’t think that gray area means lower than 6.. What about Norway (which is extremely liberal) or Switzerland?? And I live in Croatia, which would be a modest 6.1 on this chart, but definitely NOT like Russia or Uganda.. o.O

Gray, like for Norway and Switzerland, means they were not a part of the survey since they’re not in the European Union.
