Too Queer to Read
Banned Book Week is wrapping up, and you can bet your bottom dollar that queer titles are tops among the small-minded bigots looking to control access to literature in American schools..

“Every year, the [American Library Association] and other liberal groups use this trumped-up event to intimidate and basically silence concerned parents… the truth is, parents have every right and responsibility to object to their kids receiving sexually explicit and pro-gay literature without their permission, especially in a school setting.” – Candi Cushman, education analyst for Focus on the Family.
Yes, because everyone knows the best way to make sure kids don’t try to get their hands on something is to tell them they can’t have it.
Courtesy of the National Coalition Against Censorship, here’s a brief rundown of queer titles that the Moral Minority have tried (sometimes successfully) to remove from public libraries, schools and, in some cases, even bookstores.

I’m always amazed at how much time/man-hours are spent by these religious fucktards finding the tiniest bit of homosexual kernels there are in all the books in libraries, etc ….. as if they have nothing else to do but find anything even remotely related to “homosexuality” — a do or die philosophy for all of them.

Whats sad about it is they spend so much of their time focusing on sexual acts. The religious elders and leaders of the day brought to Jesus a woman caught in the act of adultery, normally a stoning offence. He told them basically that their own lives weren’t so clean either then told the woman He didn’t condemn her. Nothing has changed in 2000 years.

they always say jesus is coming back etc… the religious leaders don’t need / want a messiah to come. a messiah would steal their power and influence over their minions. if jesus did come back the religious fanatics would be the first to condemn him harshly. maybe bully him to suicide? yeah, because to crucify someone nowadays is rather difficult.
jesus is just a tool for them to feel superior to others and therefore self accord the right to condemn.
hopefuly they’ll continue to lose power in the decades to come!

The woman was going to be stoned to death, and they wanted Jesus to cast the first stone. But Jesus said, “Let the one with no sin cast the fist stone.” And no one come forward.
Now is there any one out there that has no sin???

Having growing up during a sex negative time, I am amazed at the amount of LBGT fiction that is oriented toward young people today. If only such literature were available when I was young. Such literature can go a long way in normalizing the fact that homosexuality is in fact normal. Hopefully a day will come when religion will be relegated to a class of myths and superstition by mainstream society. Wishful thinking for sure.

“Hopefully a day will come when religion will be relegated to a class of myths and superstition …”
It already is (and has been) to anyone with even the tiniest bit of intelligence, i.e, using common sense and logic.

“It already is”
Are you referring to mainstream society?

Good heavens, you weren’t aiming that 2nd sentence at Bruce, were you? Can’t tell with posts sometimes, and as I’ve noted, lol, with your posts sometimes you just start ripping somoene a new a&&**** and sometimes I’m not sure who that someone is.
What I got that Bruce meant by that one phrase that you quoted, was, he was hoping that it would become that way in general, for everyone / the majority / bulk of society, not just himself.
Obviously we see the error in perception / judgement / whatever we want to call it. The point is, how do we get the masses to see, so that we do indeed have a majority who agree with our view, right?

Basic English grammar — conjugation:
He said, “Hopefully a day will come when religion …” (The second subject/noun of his sentence/statement.)
I followed it with, “It already is …” (My subject/pronoun was referencing his second subject/noun — what else would “It” be?)
There was no reference in my statement to either him as an individual or the masses as a society with regard to what I was referring to.

@Penboy – I know you did not entend to insult me nor did I percieve any insult. But unfortunately, I have to disagree with you as I do not think that mainstream society is there yet. I would love to have you prove me wrong, I really would.

What’s next, ban war books to stop wars from happening… how dumb can you get?
It’s time to embrace pink, and stop whining people aren’t normal

I noticed that just one of the groups seeking to have any gay-themed books banned from libraries and anywhere else they can is called, “Parents Protecting the Minds of Children.”
I think that (and others just like it) group should change their name to a more proper name: “Parents Controlling the Minds of Children.”

That is what these parents say about the Gay Agenda.

Thank goodness I live in the UK where this nonsense does not exist (one good thing Blair did was get rid of Section 28 of the Local Government Act).
Really? Maybe not about sexual stuff, but from what I’ve found it would seem that your government routinely acts to keep books that cast government agencies in a manner they don’t like from being published in your country.
John Stewart even had a whole monologue on his show recently about how an unedited clip showing proceedings in the Parliament that was part of the show was white-screened and muted when it was broadcast in the UK. Apparently the reason that was given was it’s illegal over there for a comedy show to use footage of government proceedings.
To me, that’s a lot more dangerous then keeping sex from kids (not that I’m in favor of that either, mind you).

“Das war ein Vorspiel nur, dort wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen.” (“That was but a prelude; where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people also.”) Heinrich Heine, 1821.
This is a universal problem.
I realize it’s not my place to say what is and is not “American” but I can’t think of anything more profoundly anti-American than book-burning. We need to ask these people why they hate America so.

My High School librarian was an amazing lady. She subscribed to Time, MacLean’s, Newsweek, the English version of Pravda (this was during the Cold War), Omni (a science fiction magazine where I read my first depiction of graphic gay sex), National Geographic, etc, and a dozen newspapers. About half-a-dozen of us showed up every morning to read.
The Christian club showed up every morning, too, but they were just interested in the conference room. They brought their own book.
When I was 13, the librarian handed me a copy of The Hobbit. When I was done The Hobbit she handed me The Fellowship of the Ring and so on. One day there was this absolutely beautiful book about Neo paganism sitting on the shelf. I skipped a class and read it in one sitting. I never saw it after that though: I think she had bought it for a teacher.
Unfortunately, many of the books in our library had pages ripped out of them: either by the administration, or by students, or parents. I doubt it was ever done by the librarian.
And that brings me to my point: even if cooler heads prevail and these would-be censors fail, there is nothing to stop them from simply stealing the book from the library, or to stop them from ripping out what they don’t like.

Is there anything more profoundly uncivilised than ripping pages out of a book because you don’t like what is said? Do they really believe that facts or ideas cease to exist because you rip the pages out of one book? Everyone has the right to argue against ideas or actions they disagree with, but isn’t it somewhat idiotic to believe you have struck a blow for decency, goodness, or whatever because you have ripped a page or two out of a book?

Realize – sometimes when racy pages have been removed from a book, it was not done to censor the book. It was some kid ripping out his favorite passage to go have a fap with. I’m gay, and I still used to jack to those pages (#20-22) in Mario Puzo’s The Godfather where Sonny is banging the bridesmaid at his sister’s wedding. You just can’t beat great literature!

Under Daddy’s Roomate, when Palin said “she didn’t need to read that stuff” I’m pretty sure by “that stuff” she meant books at all.

I like that. Yes we have some closed minded folks in our country and most of them seem to belong to the same club.

My favourite gay novel was written in 1969 by the award winning writer, Professor Samuel R. Delany. Delany claims that it is somewhat autobiographical. It is narrated by a nameless 11 year old. I think it is one of the most important gay novels ever written having been completed just days before the Stonewall riots of 1969. I think this is the ideal children’s novel, but is also suitable for older teens and adults as well. You can download a free copy at this URL.
http://www.4shared.com/get/XX8t6uUj/Samuel_R_Delany_-_Hogg.html
Here is the opening passage which starts off a bit slow, but quickly picks up speed as you get into it:
This story is mostly Hogg’s.
But first I have to tell you some about me.
When I was eleven, I used to suck off a kid named Pedro behind the bottom landing of the stairs that
went to the basement. He was a sad-looking, thirteen-year-old spic who wore baggy pants I don’t think he
ever changed, and a white, short-sleeved shirt he put on fresh Sunday mornings; Saturday nights it was
gray. Standing by the radiator, he would grind his sneakers on the gritty boards and rub the heel of his hand
on the hard place over his groin. His knuckles were red from chewing. “You want it?” He’d dart around
scared glances. “Come on, take it now. Go on, take it.” His zipper was always half open.
Squatting, I’d nose between the brass teeth to smell his sweat. He would push penis, both testicles, and
the two little fingers of his left hand into my mouth. Holding his thin hips, I troweled my tongue inside his
foreskin, till, leaning and grunting, he would spurt his greasy juice and, quickly limp, a tablespoon of urine.
Once he told me, when I stood up, “You look funny down there. You really look funny.”

I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate Focus on the Family. They are the epitome of evil.
You know, with this sort of extreme hatred coming from the religious right, you would think a gay “Malcolm X” would come along in the name of skepticism…condemning all of this religious nonsense..and would push gays to separate themselves from it. Now THAT is the gay agenda the far right should be afraid of, not a library organization that stands up for freedom of press….not an organization that prevents kids from being bullied to death…if they will go to such extremes to legislate their morality…its time people wake up and see the elephant in the room: religion. If anything is a hindrance for this society’s ability to become more technologically advanced, more educated, and more socially egalitarian…it is the archaic beliefs these kinds of people hold.

It should be noted that the number 1 book banned in schools today is the Bible, followed closely by the Torah, Koran and any other religiously suggestive book, because children need to be protected from learning about faith (be it faith of their fathers, or the faith of others). While you may rant about religious groups and parents wanting to strike books they are opposed to from the reading lists, remember that these 1000 year old books were the first ones to be crossed off.

“It should be noted that the number 1 book banned in schools today is the Bible, followed closely by the Torah, Koran and any other religiously suggestive book”
What’s your point? That religion should be taught in public schools? You [conveniently?] neglected to mention public. Sorry, but our Constitution simply does not allow that and for very good reason. And the religious right don’t have any good [intellectual] reasons for their banning.
So, again, What’s your point?
