World’s shortest “It Gets Better” Video
After Justin Bieber was supposedly the target of a "faggot"-laced verbal assault at a Canadian laser tag outing, which for all you know was the Bieber camp’s way of spinning a fight that Justin himself started, word arrived he’d use the incident to publicly take stand against bullying. Which he just did. For twenty seconds. More at Queerty.

Kind of ironic that you’re calling him an internet tough guy because I’d wager money you wouldn’t call anyone a faggot in real life that was bigger than you.

Didn’t you, once upon a time, say you’d never post anything about the Bieb? XP
Heh, he’s cute and all, but what on earth does he know about “it gets better.”
well, he for sure has a lot of hatred upon him as well. look around the comments here..
there’s criticism, there’s “i don’t like what he does”, there’s “i don’t think he really is as good and original as his fame would indicate”, and there’s what’s happening out there.
i’m sure he can say a word or two about being subjected to diffuse hatred, even if he’s maybe not the smartest kid out there and the “briefness” of his statement also kind of makes it look like a joke.
It sure did get better for him.
to be fair, I’m sure he was a perfectly nice kid before people told him he had the ability to sing.
Not even 20 sec. — 13 sec. (his image) But if he can use his popularity even just to try to help out with gay teens (even one teen that might look up to him then it helps), then it’s OK. Just too bad he didn’t use the word gay in this message. Seems he “wants to help” but he doesn’t want to “get too close” to the gay community. But at least he didn’t try to sing his message.
I would bet it’s not him that wants to do more, but his managers and PR people. Remember the struggle Ellen had originally? He’s awfully close to her, they both claim to be good friends, and they are kind of intertwined in each others’ careers at the moment. I think we should appreciate what he has done. If even one person stops picking on somone else because of this, then I would call it a success.
I never had a problem with him wanting to get a message out there, because he probably has a good heart, and if he and Ellen are friends (they look more like twins) it would make sense that he would want to speak up about something like this. But what on earth does Bieber know about “it gets better?” Seriously. A message to the bullies would have made a lot more sense than a message to the bullied. He is in a position to deride teens who would even think about bullying others. I mean, he could have put his image on the line and spoken up for gay kids, but the message that “it gets better” coming from him sounds insincere.

It’s called freedom of speech!
Yes, it is, most definitely. But, are YOU gay? (I’m assuming you are because you’re in here and you’re reacting to your own Bieber radar.) So, do YOU enjoy being called some derogatory word (for gay)? I realize “faggot” may be common in your country for homosexuals (but is it TRULY a word of “endearment”?), but I’m sure there are German or other language words that you don’t or wouldn’t appreciate being called. Just think about that while you enjoy your free speech.
BTW, In Germany, do you have as much or the same free speech we try to enjoy having here in USA? Just curious.

No, its called hate speech. And this board is not a republic. This is a community based around supporting and celebrating boys/men and their sexuality. It is one of MANY avenues we have to speak our mind. But its also possibly the ONLY avenue many of us have to voice ourselves when it comes to this subject. Josh himself stated in his last post about raising funds that Milkboys is “a project that helped a notable amount of queer teenagers to come to terms with themselves & their sexuality.”
So if you want to verbalize hate speech toward an individual (even a famous one you dont know) don’t do it here, its not appropriate.

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,” – Voltaire
This gets quoted often and for good reason. We can’t start banning opinions left and right just because we don’t like them. It sets a bad precedent. Instead of calling for someone’s message to be banned, it’s a much better idea to simply debate someone and prove them wrong. It’s a better idea to try and convince people of your opinion through discourse than censorship.
If people want to have a discussion thats fine. If you want to use the word, do so. But thats totally different then using the word to “bully” someone else, if you are gay or not it does not matter.
In a free society, people of the RIGHT to say what they want, even hateful slurs. And I will defend that right to the very end as well.
But this is a community of people, especially a lot of young guys who are trying to understand and accept themselves even when in the real world everyone else may be saying their sexuality is “wrong.” If we cannot have respect for members of this community who still need a place of support, and fun, then whats the point of this place? A porn site? My point is this blog services a need besides simple entertainment, and that service is lost if we start using hateful words, with hateful intent and direct them at other teen boys.
Leave dx alone. Faggot =/= gay. The meaning of the word is changing. There can be heterosexual “fags”.
No way. This is a slippery slope if ever I saw one. It’s just like the “N” word debate. I say we just don’t don’t use either.
@Pieman – i agree with you in concept, but you’re talking about expressing opinions. I really don’t see how the statement “He is such a faggot” is an expression of opinion. It’s a statement of false fact that utilizes derogatory and hateful terminology.
Yeah, I know it’s not a particularly VALUABLE statement, I just don’t think banning things is a really acceptable solution. I mean, we try banning speech, guns, drugs, it never works. The best thing we can do is simply not give people who say things like “what a fucking faggot” any credibility. And a lot of people don’t, so that’s a good start.
As you say, there is no practical way to ban a word, and their shouldn’t be. But as a community we need to show there is a zero tolerance policy on people directing hateful speech at another for the singular purpose of being hateful. Banning means nothing- but taking a stand and publicly saying “we are not supporting that here!” does. It shows strength in the community, and devalues hateful words, and ideas.

I agree with this.

Anyways, It’s a good post . Thanx <3
To be fair, I’m pretty sure Ellen DeGeneres’ people told him how long to make his statement. For the intended audience, the messenger matters more than the message – as long as it’s aware of his stance, they’ve succeeded.
Not surprised about the laser tag spat, considering him and his stupid friends with the water balloon incident or whatever it was with the cops. He’d get more positive attention if he was on a sitcom. No scratch that, his CSI appearance was bad enough.
I agree that it is important to see celebs gearing up with messages of hope and encouragement and that even if you only help one person, that’s enough. But even most of the gays hate Bieber. I’ll give him that, that he knows what it’s like to be bullied and harassed hahaha.
Oh well, someone might get something out of it anyways, but I don’t think it’ll be anyone over the age of 13 at the oldest.
What I don’t get is why it’s so important a “celebrity” delivers the message? Why not a parent, or a teacher, or a friend? I’d feel a lot better about someone that cares about me trying to encourage me than some autotuned singer who doesn’t care about me any further than the records I would buy to pad his multi-million dollar salary.
Celebrity worship in this country has always confused me…
about 2 years ago
Excellent points. But even as confused as you (and others) may be, you must have recognized by now the incredible “fad quality” that young musicians and TV personalities have on at least the younger, like tweens/teeny boppers. From hair to shoes, they will follow, buy and imitate whatever it is their “favorite” personality has or does. Therefore, those celebrities have a wider audience and if it (whatever fad) gets picked up in anything remotely “positive”, then the powers that be will push it in any way they can.
“Celebrity worship in this country has always confused me”
Worship could be considered an appropriate word. If they were to put out their own “bible,” it would be probably be more popular than any bible in a hotel room (and thankfully, they aren’t there anymore).

The reason I’ll point out the importance of celebrities and musicians is not only because they tend to have more influence on our culture and state of mind, but also because sometimes music is all a downtrodden, bullied youth has in their life. You just never know.
For example, bands like Linkin Park and Evanescence were the only thing that got me through my teenage years.
You see so many kids turning to music, and either it can be a positive thing or a bad thing depending on what they get into.
So while I think Bieber’s little snippet is perhaps half-hearted and it gets me angry that he doesn’t openly acknowledge homosexuals (who commit suicide more often than any other youth), I’ll give him points for making it at all.
You never know, someone out there might be having it hard in school or home life and the only music they listen to is Bieber….so to them, it would mean a lot.
I understand about how it is more meaningful for a teacher, parent, or friend to step out….but sadly, there’s not enough of that in this country.
My best friend had to drop out of high school because of bullying since the teachers and staff never did anything about it. Music was all he had for a while too. So you can see the importance.
No name calling is an excuse for hitting a 12 year old boy.
That is bullying and if being called a faggot upsets him that much, what is he hiding ?

Nothing stupider than people who jump on the bandwagon of hating Justin Bieber because everyone else does.
“It Gets Better” is specifically about overcoming gay bullying, here Bieber is showing support for the cause and people can only jump on the bandwagon because they think it somehow gives them the status of being cool for hating him.
I don’t know if any of you watched the video, but no, it doesn’t make you cool to jump on that bandwagon. The best way to find out whether someone has respect for themselves is if they have respect for other people, in this way we can see that some of you don’t have respect for yourselves either.
I think people are more making fun of him for his inarticulate delivery of the statement. I don’t care one way or another that Justin Bieber did it more than any other celeb, I just think he could have elaborated a bit more, and been a bit clearer.
I don’t think it’s so much that everyone’s jumping on a bandwagon as it is everyone fails to see anything special about him unless they happen to like his “music” or his body and just wish he’d go away.
Being good looking at 16 is the rule rather then the exception, his songs sound like they were written by someone half his age, he has proven repeatedly in interviews that he can’t think for himself and can barely articulate or remember the canned answers he’s given, and yet it’s impossible to avoid seeing his image or hearing something about him daily.
Honestly, it’s no wonder people are sick to death of him and just wish he’d go away. Maybe if he performed a song that took some talent to sing AND performed it well, people would change their minds….. if it’s not already too late.
We have a very prominent gay social news caster and reporter in Denver that did a respectable ‘It gets better’ public service ad. He said he was horribly bullied but it did end … what I want to know is how to short circuit the bullying besides fighting? Some kids simply cannot fight. And I don’t want more laws or police … that is shooting mosquitoes with a shotgun.
Anyway, Justin did do the ad and that’s fine. It will resonate with some kids Im sure.
Just a thought…. Didn’t the Gay movement take back the word ‘Faggot’ in the 70s with Larry Kramer’s novel ‘Faggots”? I don’t know, it kind of goes with “Light My Fire”!
Amongst the gay community for a number of yrs back then we called each other faggots. I would say that that in some trendy urban areas like San Francisco, it stuck or the word was taken back to some degree. But for whatever reason ‘queer’ replaced it. Personally, I felt ‘faggot’ was always like the N word to African Americans….sometimes I would use it around other queers, but hearing str8′s use it was always uncomfortable/weird for me.
We discussed here, the various ways to deal with bullying; from doing nothing to training youth in Aikido. The most logical method that seems to fit all circumstances is that bystanders step forth and through numbers, defuse bullies and bullying. I’ve never seen in my life, a bully stand against a group adamantly against his purpose. And girls especially seem to defuse bullies the fastest. After all, str8 bullies hold females above all else in their faux chivalrous ideology.
Absolutely, Real1 and that’s what I liked most about Justin’s brief statement – his appeal to others to stand up for those being bullied.
I found the cross around his neck deliciously ironic.
His voice sounds very deep. Has he been on the booze and cigarettes? Justin Bieber – Wild Man of Rock.
When he said: “If you’re a bi….” I thought he was going to say “bisexual”…but in fact he said “bystander”….which isn’t the same thing at all.
Don’t worry, Justin. If we see you being bullied, we’ll intervene. I’m just not sure on which side…^^
I will say this for him, though – “Justin-Bieber-Slowed-Down-By-800%” is probably the BEST track that I have heard on milkboys.
I noticed that too about his voice….I’ve haven’t heard him say that much publicly because I don’t follow him, but in this vid, his voice sounds strained exactly like from a night of “booze and cigarettes”. That being unlikely, he’s young enough to still have a voice ‘change’…correct?
I am actually a Bieber fan who usually tries to defend him on other boards. I feel that he is talented and has a lot of hate thrown at him because a lot of people have animosity about how popular he has become and he can sometimes come off as arrogant which I do not believe he is. In truth, he seems to be a humble teenager. However, after the recent laser tag incedent and a follow up visit to Ellen where he also did not mention the name calling or the fact that so many gay teens are killing themselves over this issue, he is starting to piss me off. Like so many boybands of yesteryear, Justin or his camp is content to have gay fans who spend money on their product without ever actually acknowledging their existence. Shame on him. I actually tweeted him about the last suicide and asked him to simply retweet and say something positive, he never did. That could be because he never saw it, the kid has thousands of people following him. But more and more I am starting to think he is ignoring this news. This latest “It Gets Better” clip just adds fuel to the fire. It is almost like Justin felt he should say something or he might lose face, so he decided to say as little as possible. If he was called a “faggot” by the other kid at laser tag then he knows firsthand what it feels like and should acknowledge it. I still like him, and I have to admit that if any of what I theorize is true then the fact of his age and that he has a team of people telling him what to do certainly plays a part, but it also makes me sad.
Freaking this. As much as I find the whole teenage crooner phenomenon ridiculous, I find it all that sadder that Bieber is not willing to acknowledge his gay fanbase and talk about a subject that directly affects them (I imagine a tween boy could get picked on just for listening to Bieber’s music). Instead he talks about bullying in generic terms. For all of 14 seconds. I think it’s cowardly of him.
I think it’s a HUGE career move to embrace the queer community. In his case, I really think it would enhance his career success. You gotta believe that issues like this are discussed in his ‘camp’, with his career mangers and his birth family. Ultimately though, it’s his decision and so far he’s declined to be anything but ‘generic’ in his message about bullying.
The buying power of queer youth is unimaginable. With music, it’s something they can do in relative safety without fear of consequences. In my day Carole King’s “Tapestry” album was probably bought by more queers than anybody else. Then Michael Jackson and Madonna….going on to the boy band phenomena and now Lady Ga Ga. And that’s only a fraction of gay youth because many more go into rock/metal.
Oh, no! Did any of you feel it? The Earthquake! It had to be around 7.5-8, I’m sure!
“In my day Carole King’s ‘Tapestry’ album”
Damn! Was that, gasp!, actually an endorsement of her good music?
Stay tuned to your local Blog broadcast for latest details …..
‹(•¿•)›
Hey puff adder….it was no “endorsement” but simply an ‘observation’ that a lot of my queer ilk listened to this kind of music. I chose rock, which you know woefully little about. But I do like Lady Ga Ga and most house/techno trance music, because it’s the best to dance to.
Hiiiissssssss!! I know that was a strong earthquake! It shook my whole house and I ran to my window to see my classic car (1971 Torino, coincidentally?, the same date as that album) in the driveway sway about!
Bullshit. You wouldn’t have brought THAT album up with the likes of Michael Jackson and Madonna — both ROCK singers. Get over it, there was great music back then. But of course, you’ll die before you ever admit that.
Michael Jackson/Madonna/Carole King = rock. Yeah, like I said you know virtually nothing about the original rock movement that shock the world…just not your world.
You be the original pop/syrup rock fan that lingered on the fringe of what really happened back in the day with rock. But hey, music tastes are often eclectic and can even encompass snakes. And BTW, you’re not supposed to talk to me; Josh’s decree.

My only problem with the video is it seem like he was in the middle of a busy press tour day, and moments before breaking for lunch someone was like “Ok, Justin before lunch we need you to do a “It Gets Better Video”
and then he was fed 3 lines to include, repeated those out between his “um”s and then they all ran off for food.
He didnt even form a sentence around the “It Gets Better” slogan, just popped it in there cus he knew it was one of the lines he was suppose to include. I have NO IDEA what this kid is actually like, or what he thinks about this subject. But whoever put together this video did a horrible job at it.
Agreed…that and together with the roughness of his voice did not make a very sincere vid. And you’re correct, we never really get to know a celeb because of their very public, often posed persona. He’s facing a huge body and potential voice change….that’s hard enough for an average teen boy, but think about what it must be like for the whole world to watch.

was a bad attempt at a play on words. (per-say = every time he opens his mouth, he reminds me of why i am not a fan.)

I think a lot of what people say about Bieber is caused by jealousy of his success. He had the right way to go about things to get noticed and to get ahead. I can imagine that he might have been laughed at, or even bullied a little, before he was successful just because even at 14 he sounded like a 12 year old.
I’ve been part of a few attempted “Biebs” over the years since the internet became useful and it requires more than a pretty face to get ahead. It requires talent and luck. There are more than a few teens I’ve known who have better voices and yes, even better looks than Bieber but not the right music.
This message will reach far more people at 21 seconds than any number of 60 second spots by people that a teen can’t relate to. So I applaud him and his people for setting it up.

TO ALL THOSE SMART CRUDE PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH THERE CRUEL COMMENTS EVER THINK THAT THE DUDE WHO PRODUCE THIS VIDEO,HIS NAME IS BRUNO MARS,IS NOT ALL THAT GOOD.YOU PUT OUT ALL THIS GARBAGE AND DUMP IT ON THIS YOUNG LAD NAMED JUSTIN BIEBER. I THINK HIS HEART IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE,BUT YOU DO WHAT YOUR MANAGER ASK YOU TO DO.HE IS A YOUNG TEEN STAR BEING PUSH AND PULLED TO SOMEONE,S TUNE.I UNDERSTAND IF HIS VOICE IS BECOMING DIFFERENT,HE MAY NOT HAVE A SINGING CAREER ANY MORE.IF THAT HAPPENS I’AM SURE HE’LL MAKE ON THE BIG SCREEN.GOOL LUCK JUSTIN.
Dude cool the caps, please.;-) But you’re correct; Justin is a commodity and a piece if eye candy/meat. And somewhere amongst all that he’s trying to grow up, find himself and have a young voice in this world. And sadly, more people are hopeful that he’ll fail at some point than wish him success. It’s the double whammy in being famous-a road he chose to go down, even if he’s pushed by managers, fans and family.
I never hear of a young adult begging to be ‘not famous’ after they have become famous. I’m sure having millions of fans worldwide is like a drug or TV evangelism. But as we’ve all seen, that’s not usually enough….witness the whole Britney Spears debacle. I’m sure nobody wants to go down her road, but it seems that so many celebs just get stuck there.

“…remember when the gay community was nice and supportive and friendly? those were the days…”
Hang on a second….Bieber never once mentions the words “gay” or “lesbian” or “bisexual” during the whole of his (scripted) performance.
I could be wrong, but I saw and heard nothing in the video which stated that Bieber was doing it to assist gay youth. It was just a very bland, very generic (and very carefully scripted) statement about bullying in the most generalised sense of the term. There was nothing specifically “supportive” of the gay community in it…

So you are cute, I am not surprized. But I understand as I was a Kris Kristofferson lookalike. It really gets old after awhile.

If you look like him and are as smart as your comments indicate – what a guy!

Yeah, I had similar thoughts. If SuperVee is as young as he says he is I am really am impressed. Not just bright but also sincere. If he is leading us on I might never return to this site again and loose all faith in humanity.
Sorry for going off topic. Just couldn’t resist.

;O I’m not bieber’s age, I just turned 18, but everyone thinks I’m like 14-16. :/

Thanks kid. I’m a fan of yours.

The general distaste and hypercritical views expressed towards Justin Bieber is such a cliché. In every generation there’s a Justin Bieber who becomes a media phenomenon subjected to microscopic scrutiny by a divided camp of same aged peers who either worship or detest the individual’s work and persona. People like Justin Bieber are the zeitgeist representations of their contemporary eras. Personally, I find his music entertaining, albeit overly produced and too commercial. It is what it is, e.g. pop music. Projecting myself into his shoes, I’m divided on whether or not I would want to be him. On the surface, it might not be so bad for a day, but the madness which is his life at the moment is something that I wouldn’t wish upon myself or anyone else. I’m sure when all is said and done, when he’s set for life from the income he’s earning at the sacrifice of a normal adolescence, he may say it was worth it. For his sake, I hope so, because as much as celebrities are our modern day gods, when all is said and done, they still have feet of clay and hearts that bleed.

Right on.

I guess 20 seconds of respect for him from me is good enough. Considering that I once said I’ll never ever acknowledge him.

I don’t know why everyone is hung up on there only being 20 seconds or 13 seconds where he is actually speaking…. Sometimes a shorter message gets a point across better than a longer one. Moreover; not every star dictates how much airtime he is going to get. By keeping it short he may be reaching more people.
I won’t criticize anyone who says anything against bullying – even if it does not say something specifically against bulling of gay people (as long as it does not have a message like “bulling is bad except when you bully a fag”).
I myself don’t care for his music… and would say that I think the stardom has gone to his head. I lost any respect for him that I had when he twittered that one boy’s phone number saying it was his – just to get back at him. I don’t think that he is a nice person – or maybe he doesn’t think things trough.
I agree with the above comment “what does he know about ‘it gets better’”. He probably did not get called “fag” before he made it big, and then he works overtime to appear straight posing with pretty girls.
Personally I hope he posts more anti bullying comments – backs it up…. and despite the fact I don’t like his music I hope he does make an anti-bully song.

I chaperoned a field trip for sixth grade boys and girls and during the final dinner, we were shown a slide show of photos taken during the trip that had a “pop” music soundtrack. When a Justin Bieber song came on, you should have heard the girls scream in admiration. It was so loud and extensive that I was afraid I might lose my eardrums. Of course, I had no idea what all the fuss was about (I don’t think I had ever knowingly ever heard a Justin Bieber song), but somebody there clued me in,”It’s Justin Bieber.” Well, I can say that boys may not care much for him, but the GIRLS sure do. And I know from this group of sixth graders, at least, that boys and girls a very much interested in each other at this age. Which means to me that if GIRLS get recruited into the “bullying isn’t cool” and “if you are a bystander, why don’t you help” cause, (as Justin said in this quick spot), then maybe the girls’ anti-bullying attitude will affect the boys.

Justin is or was a boy treble singer which can be the sweetest voice to the human ear. To loose such a range is sometimes tragic. I have tried to encourage Josh to post a video of Eugeny who is a russian boy treble who mysteriously disappeared possibly due to his voice change. His was a voice for the ages and still brings tears to my eyes. He has only three performances on the net recorded in the 1970′s I think.

Josh,
Why don’t you select what might be called an archetypal Justin Bieber track and post it? I suppose that I could just trawl through youtube myself, but – even if incidentally – you probably know more about the subject than I do. From my point of view, it would be more interesting to hear your choice than it would be for me to just listen to some random Justin Bieber track.
It’s time that I heard what kinkynik calls “the plastic manufactured little tart” sounds like. Bieber constitutes a gap in my pop culture knowledge…

IF you are desirous of a primer on Bieber then you need look no further than YouTube.
On Bieber, I don’t have an opinion. I don’t like him, I don’t dislike him. I just don’t fill my life with such vacuous nonsense like what newest teen hearthrob is attracting all the teenage girls. That kind of thing doesn’t even register in my reality.
I can appreciate him coming out and making the statement, but as I’ve said before, it’s the wrong statement.
We should be saying “It is better”, not “It gets better.”
Also: Woot, 100th post! Go me! Josh, for my prize, I want a Love and Lust post. :p

I went. I saw. Given all of the comments he has generated in this thread (not least by myself), I honestly thought that it might have been a more interesting experience…
But it’s just empty. Like looking into a vacuum. Not the sort of experience that I would wish to repeat.

It’s interesting to see, in a community like Milkboys, with so many people marginalized because they don’t necessarily fit into mainstream societies neat little boxes, how many people are hating on someone just because they don’t fit into their own view of how the world should be.
Whether his music is any good or not is irrelevant. Hating an artist just because their music doesn’t fit your tastes, or is ‘plastic mass produced bubblegum pop’, is just as stupid as hating someone because of their sexual orientation.

Not a fan of his music….But….Not a bad little message.

Justin was at an arcade just trying to be a kid and was cornered by a bunch of younger kids when a 12-year-old punk called him a fag. He didn’t start it. Does the guy who wrote this really think a small 16 year old would have a chance against a bunch of 12 year olds. It sounds like the little creep who started it gets away with lots of stuff because his daddy is a rich lawyer.

Thanks for your post. First time I heard of justin was on this site. I’m really turned off by the comments I read about him. I find him to be a really cute kid and multi talented. I just don’t understand what there is not to like about this kid.
